Faisalabad: Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) expresses deep concern and strong condemnation over the case of Maria Shahbaz, a 13-year-old Christi
Lahore: May 15, 2008. (Report by Margaret Piara) “It is my first time to get a flower from my children on the Mothers’ Day. I was crying to this happy occasion provided by the Milap Organization”. Parveen, the teacher of the Milap Sewing centre was talking to some 80 participants of brick kiln women gathered at Raja Jang in Kasur district some 55km down south of Lahore on May 11, 2008. She said that she has helped the young girls and mothers of this village where Christians are a small minority of 7o houses with the 1700 Muslim families. She feels happy to heave helped to them to learn the sewing skills and food preparation.
The women were gathered who took three hours leave from the good-natured brick kiln owner, which was unusual, but they have to make the same number of bricks after the sunset. They were allowed because of the Sunday service.
The out going catechist Ashraf Paul, who served in the community from last 6 years is transferred to another district of the 7 districts of the Lahore Archdiocese, said that he was dedicated to the cause of women and the poor children by starting the pre-school for the small kids before they would go to the school. He acknowledged the occasional financial help by the Milap Organization by way of the salary of the schoolteacher.
Sonia Sadiq, another member of the Milap Organization accompanied the director to give one rose flower each mother by her children. The kids would clap and pictures were taken which gave the mothers confidence that they have some value in the male dominated society where they are considered to be child bearing machines and play a secondary role in the house decisions and society at large.
St. Paul’s pre-school children which are in the primary stage from 7 to 12 years presented poems, dance and hymns which made the mothers happy and satisfied.
Margaret Paira, the Milap Organization director told the mothers, “this is the month of May, the month of reciting rosary and you mothers are to follow the example of Our Mother Mary and the good life of Mother Teresa.”. She further said, “the Milap Rosary group should continue to come together every evening especially during this month which will give them meaning of the hard labour in the brick kilks”.
She continued that it is her wish to have a Milap home where the poor children would get education and then proceed to the proper schools. She assured her little support on Christmas and Easter and other occasions like in the past. The Milap Organization is working for the widows, orphans and disabled and the poorest people of the Muslim and Christians society from February 2004.
Bashir Masih, a local Christian council member said, “We thank the Milap Organization and the catechist who is going to another parish.” He thanked for his constant effort for human, religious and educational development of poor children with the coopearationof Milap Organization. He said that the kids have been helping their parents at the brick kilns and studied in their free time and we are happy to see them on the stage to perform small items.”.
