New Delhi, July 27, 2007: A Missionary was beaten up at Guwahati the capital city of Assam and succumbed to death after four days. Hands of Hindutva fanatics are suspected in the killing and Police have failed to trace the culprit. According to the source reaching to the All India Christian Council (aicc), Mr. Hemanta Das, age of 29, an Assamese convert was beaten brutally by unknown persons suspected to be the members of a religious fanatic group on June 28, 2007 and later succumbed to death on July 1 after four days of struggling between life and death at hospital. The Executive Director of Resource Centre Under Elohim (RESCUE), Mr. Amzad DeCruz, told the Christian Council, "On several occasions, he was cautioned by radical groups of the dire consequences that would follow if he tried to convert people to Christianity." Rev. Dr. Ngul Khan Pau, General Secretary of Council of Baptist Churches in North East India (CBCNEI), said that a murder case has been lodged in a local police station and police failed to trace the culprits until the filing of this report. Before converting to Christianity, Mr. Das used to be a member of the Hindutva fanatic group known as Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. After embracing Christianity he became a member of Guwahati Baptist Church. The Council of Baptist Churches in North East India has declared Mr. Das as the first Assamese Martyr. The cases of atrocities against the Christian minority in the state of Assam have been reported in recent past. Nepali, Assamese and Bodo Christians in lower Assam are the victims of these atrocities. All India Christian Council National Secretary of Public Affairs, Dr. Sam Paul, has written to Assam Chief Minister, Mr. Tarun Gogoi, to book the killers of Mr. Hemanta Das and provide safety to the Christian minorities in the state of Assam.
