Christian man in Pakistan arrested for blasphemous contents on Facebook

LAHORE: February 22, 2018. (PCP) A Christian man namely Patras Masih was accused of blasphemy and arrested in a case FIR NO.174/18 under section 295-C Pakistan Penal Code has been registered on February 19, 2018 at Police Station Shahdara Town, Lahore, hours after religious activists blocked a busy crossing road at Shahdara and demanded arrest and public hanging of the accused. According to the FIR, Patras Masih, who lives near Baba Sain shrine in Dher Shahdara and is working at Habib Bank Shahdara Moor, Lahore, was running a Facebook group namely pagloon ki basti (A Village of Mad) where he uploaded blasphemous contents that hurts sentiment of Muslims. Reportedly, he managed to escape shortly before an angry mob raided his home after this, protesters moved towards the Shahdara Chowk where they staged a sit-in for a few hours to protest under the leadership of Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) against the alleged blasphemy on social media. Hundreds of protesters dispersed peacefully after the police registered the case. The religious activists also demanded public hanging of Patras allegedly for committing blasphemy. The Christians of area are under fear as some extremists have threatened to attack at Christians homes but at the moment situation is under control and police are patrolling the town. Recently a complaint under blasphemy accusation has been filed against two daughters of late Asma Jahangir, a renowned lawyer and human rights activist, others at police station Gulberg Lahore by a lawyer namely Aman Ullah. Sardar Mushtaq Gill, lawyer and human rights defender said that blasphemy accusation is a sensitive issue in Pakistan and those accused of it have become an easy target for religious motivated extremists. The enraged mob can kill and burn alive any accused. These blasphemy laws should be repealed to save the public at large particularly religious minorities in Pakistan. He further stated that Asia Bibi must be released and Government should manage to save her life from the supporters of Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, who was hanged to death in murdering of ex-governor Punjab Salman Taseer, as this group has openly threatened to kill Asia Bibi if she will be acquitted and released from jail.
