Visit of US Senators to Pakistan: regional security ignoring human rights and religious freedom

Philadelphia: July 3, 2017. (PCP) Dr. Nazir S Bhatti, President and Founder of Pakistan Christian Congress PCC has expressed concerns on not raising serious issues of human rights and religious freedom by delegation of US Senators during their recent visit to Pakistan focusing on regional security. Dr. Nazir Bhatti said that security in any region cannot prevail without revival of human rights and religious freedom while Pakistan government have failed to uphold human rights and religious freedom in its territory targeting Christian, Hindus and Ahmadiyya communities with blasphemy laws and other discriminatory laws. US Senator John McCain along with Senator Lindsey Graham, Elizabeth Warren, Sheldon Whitehouse and David Perdue in a visit to Pakistan met with Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Nawaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff General Asif Bajwa and Sartaj Aziz. Senator John McCain affirmed that peace in Afghanistan or elsewhere in the region is not possible without the involvement of Pakistan. The Reuters news agency quoted two U.S. officials last month as saying the administration was considering hardening its attitude toward Islamabad because of the ease with which Pakistan-based militants have been able to launch attacks across the border in Afghanistan. "Our relationship is more important perhaps than ever before," McCain said as he left a meeting with Sartaj Aziz, Pakistan's top foreign-policy official, and army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa. U.S. critics say Islamabad is not doing enough to crack down on extremist networks. They claim that militant safe havens in Pakistan have allowed Taliban-linked extremists to plan attacks in Afghanistan and to return to safety. Dr. Nazir Bhatti said that US stands for human rights and democracy as leader of globe but not conditioning US policy with Pakistan basics is very surprising.
