Faisalabad: May 18, 2016 (PCP) In a letter to Mr. Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Chief Minister of Punjab Ref, No. PMTA/46-50/16-KPR, dated May 18, 2016 Professor Anjum James Paul Chairman Pakistan Minorities Teachers’ Association (PMTA) has requested on the submission of PhD thesis of Mr. Zafar-Ul-Islam Mehmood, a PhD scholar of University of Education Lahore on’ A study of educational problems of religious minority students in public schools of Pakistan.’ The content of the letter is presented below; To Mr. Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif Chief Minister Punjab Subject: SUBMISSION OF P.HD THESIS ON ‘A STUDY OF EDUCATIONAL PROBLEMS OF RELIGIOUS MINORITY STUDENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF PAKISTAN’ Honourable Sir, PMTA would like to draw your kind attention on the subject cited above. Mr. Zafar-Ul-Islam Mehmood, a PhD scholar of University of Education Lahore under PIN NO.085-012334-Ss5-066 has requested Pakistan Minorities Teachers’ Association to take up the matter regarding submission of his thesis. He got extension from the Higher Education Commission for one year from 01-01-2015 to 31-12-2015. He presented his thesis for submission on October 26, 2015 but the concerned quarters refused to collect his thesis making an excuse of time bar, though the scholar had approval of extension of time limit from the Higher Education Commission till 31-12-2015. The study of the thesis can be an asset to come to know the real problems and challenges of religious minority students who are facing religious discrimination and persecution in the public schools of Pakistan. These students are not only being persecuted through textbooks but also through the biased environment of the educational institutions. Lives of religious minority students are becoming miserable and pitiable day by day. Religious minority students have already lost their religious identity by a mindset which is proactive in designing curriculum and textbooks for the public educational institutions. Religious minority students are bond to study hate and discriminatory material against their own religious beliefs and practices in the textbooks of Pakistan. No arrangements have been made at any level to promote religious identity of religious minority students. They are forced to convert to Islam by all means. A Christian student Mr. Naveed Rafique has been declared fail in the viva of Islamic Studies grade 8 examination held by Punjab Examination Commission in 2016 by the biased attitude of the examiner who wanted to convert the religion of the candidate and in revenge he failed the candidate. He asked such a question that the candidate could be converted to Islam by answering that question. The biased examiner played with the fate of a marginalized Christian student. Sir, it is requested you to direct the Vice Chancellor of the University of Education Lahore to order the concerned quarters to collect the thesis of the above mentioned scholar so that after studying the thesis, problems of the religious minority students be addressed that they face in the biased environment of the public sector educational institutions. With best regards. PROF.ANJUM JAMES PAUL CHAIRMAN Copy to: 1. Minister for Education, Govt. of the Punjab, Lahore 2. Minister for Human Rights & Minorities Affairs, Govt. of the Punjab, Lahore 3. Secretary Higher Education, Govt. of the Punjab, Lahore 4. Chairman Higher Education Commission, Islamabad
