(PCP) UK Government policy on freedom of religion in Pakistan inadequate, finds report UK Government policy on freedom of religion in Pakistan inadequate, finds report Catholic peer, Lord Alton, has called on the British government to accept the “reality” of the persecution of Christians in Pakistan, as a report launched today finds UK government policy on Pakistani religious minorities to be inadequate. The All Party Parliamentary Group for International Freedom of Religion or Belief, of which Lord Alton is a Vice-Chair, launched its inquiry report in Westminster on February 24, 2016. Upon visiting UNHCR’s Bangkok detention camp, Lord Alton found that the UK Home Office’s Country Information and Guidance Report on Pakistani Christians and Christian converts, which states that such individuals are not at “a real risk of persecution”, was being used to justify unduly prolonging granting asylum to Christians fleeing Pakistan. The report on freedom of religion in Pakistan challenges the British Home Office’s Country Information and Guidance about Pakistani Christians and Christian converts, while also finding that Christians, Ahmadis and Hindus in Pakistan face a real risk of persecution. “The official line of the UK Government is that there is no persecution [of religious minorities], the reality is the opposite of that and our report dispenses with that illusion,” Lord Alton said on introducing the report at the House of Lords. “Pakistan is the biggest recipient of British aid – more than £1 billion in the last couple of years – and we should be demanding that British aid is used to protect minorities and to staunch the flow of refugees,” he added. The report appeals to the Home Office to urgently amend the country guidance regarding Pakistani Christians. It also calls on the UK Department for International Development to ensure that overseas aid is only provided to organisations and government departments in Pakistan that are protecting international human rights obligations, including freedom of religion. The report was compiled using the evidence of over 20 organisations, lawyers and academics working on the right to freedom of religion or belief in Pakistan. Lord Alton of Liverpool, David Burrowes MP, Prof. Javaid Rehman and others spoke on launching ceremony of APPG report while leaders of different organizations and Pakistani community were also present.
