Pope appeals for clemency for 3 Catholic militiamen
VATICAN CITY (AP): Pope Benedict XVI appealed for clemency Friday for three Catholic militiamen sentenced to death in Indonesia.
The appeal came in the form of a telegram sent by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Vatican`s secretary of state, on Benedict`s behalf to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and cited "humanitarian grounds."
Fabianus Tibo, Dominggus da Silva and Marinus Riwu are scheduled to be put to death Saturday for their role in inciting and carrying out attacks on Sulawesi in 2000 during violence that left some 1,000 dead from both faiths.
All three have said they are not guilty, but their final appeal was turned down by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono last year.
Amnesty International, an international rights group that opposes the death sentence in all cases, said it was concerned at reports indicating that the trial of the three men did not meet international standards of fairness.
