Civil Society condemn mob violence, Christianity is religion of peace

Faisalabad: March 22, 2015. (PCP) Christianity is religion of peace, perseverance and forgiveness. We have witnessed countless violent acts from Shanti Nagar to Kot Radha Kishan where Christians despite facing extreme oppression, acted with patience and responsibility. We the representatives of civil society organizations condemn the violent acts of angry mob in Yohanabad after suicide attacks on churches as these events have aggravated the existing situation of unrest in society. Romana Bashir, Executive Director Peace and Development Foundation (PDF) said this while addressing a press conference here on Friday. She said that It is our humble appeal to all Christians of the country to resort only in peaceful protest and would also urge the media to portray both sides of the picture. Some media houses have unleashed irresponsible propaganda against the Christians while the statement in the National Assembly by Federal Interior Minister was equally irresponsible. It is the responsibility of the state to protect all of its citizens but depriving marginalized groups of society from security is highly unfortunate, Romana added. She said that we urge federal and provincial government to investigate every aspect of these unfortunate events while keeping neutrality. Had the police played it role in responsible manner after bomb attacks, she said, the late unfortunate events could have been avoided. Romana Bashir said that 15 people have lost their lives whereas 82 left injured as a result of attacks on two churches but the government and a section of media has started rubbing salt on their wounds. She said that we have observed several acts of violence in the country and even in Punjab recently but maligning Christians on the basis of this event is unfair. She said that the state should treat all its citizens in equal manner. The Christians have gone through several acts of violence against them but they have always been remained peaceful. To restore the confidence of the people in justice, we urge government to initiate investigation to unveil real motives and factors behind these tragic events, she concluded.
