London: March 19, 2015. (PCP) Calm has finally been restored in Youhanabad, Lahore, after military intervention following Sunday's bomb attacks on two churches. But Christians are still angry and fearful as rumors are circulating that an attack on the colony is being planned. Apart from these two churches, Muslims attacked Bethany Church the following day, throwing stones and breaking the window. The cross on the main gate was also damaged and desecrated, while the police stood by. On Tuesday collective funerals were held for those who lost their lives in the church bombings, but Christians - especially the youth - are still seemingly angry with the government. They are angry as their churches were not adequately protected and angry that so many people were killed. The Government has announced compensation for the families of the deceased and the injured, but this is considered an insult. My colleague in Pakistan, Joseph Francis, said the situation is difficult but he is trying to deal with it said Nasir Saeed He said that he is in touch with police who have registered several cases against Christians, with the possibility of hundreds of arrests. He further explained that several people have fled the area, expecting an attack form the Muslims and arrest by the police. I have spoken to my friend Rev Fraz Malik, who is a local resident and has been living in this area for almost 30 years. He also witnessed this tragedy and told me that rumours are circling about Muslims preparing to attack the colony again. He further said that as an accomplice of one of the attackers was from his presbytery area, Lilyani, when he heard of plans to attack his church, he informed the high ranking police officer and now his church is being guarded by the police. He is satisfied with this for the time being, but knows that the guard does not guarantee protection. Rev Alwin Samuel, who lives a few miles away from Youhanabad said that people think the second attack will take place on Friday prayers after provoking announcements on the mosque loudspeakers. Although the possibility of another attack cannot be completely ruled out, it is hoped that since the military has taken the control of the area it will be able to control the situation, and God willing there will be no further loss of property or life. Both men have asked me if I request Christians worldwide to pray for the protection of Christians in Pakistan, that peace is restored and the government is able to handle the situation and make all of its decision related to this tragedy wisely.
