Dear Bhai Altaf Hussain, My sister Rachel Das was brutally 100% burnt at her husband`s family home around 9:00 PM on February 19, 2006 in the presence of her husband, father-in law, brother-in law, women and children of the family, while neighbors clearly heard her cries and screams. She was taken to civil hospital after about three hours where she died in the morning of February 20, 2006. This family is saying that it was merely an accident. We have given initial evidence to the Police that it was a conspiracy, but the Police would not budge. In spite of our written and repeated requests the Police at Shah Faisal Police Station, Shah Faisal Town would not enter FIR. We believe Rachel was deliberately set on fire and allowed to burn completely. My sister married McMillan Das in the December of 1993 and had two children. Few years ago, McMillan Das got involved with another woman and he tried to make my sister leave the house. She was often harassed by him and his new woman. But, Rachel refused to leave her marital home, taught at a nearby school, took care of her children and father-in law and mother-in law. Recently, the school had a big memorial service in her honor and it was a sight to see. Her children and students have lost a great person. A great injustice has been done to my sister, her children and we who adored her. Her death by fire and subsequent cover up represents serious violation of human rights. And, it is a case of violence against women. And, the lack of FIR and investigation, represents denial of due process. Those responsible for this conspiracy to eliminate Rachel should be punished. My sister had an M.A in Education and she was a dedicated mother. Her father-in law is a counselor of Drigh Road Cantonment and there is an effort to block any investigation and prosecution. This is another example of how those who have power try to suppress the right of victims. We need your help to enter an FIR and transparent investigation and prosecution of her husband McMillan Das and others. We appreciate all the work you and your organization does to help the oppressed folks of Pakistan. We pray for your intervention to start the process and continuous monitoring of a successful prosecution. No one should be allowed to burn our sisters are daughters.
