Hopegivers International seeks help after arrest of Samuel Thomas in Rajasthan, India.

Jaipur: Hopegivers International (HI), a US-based NGO, has sought contributions for an "emergency legal defence fund" to seek release of Samuel Thomas, head of a Christian mission in Rajashtan, who has been detained in connection with a controversial book. Samuel Thomas heads Emmanuel Mission International (EMI), one of the largest Christian charities affiliated to HI. He and his father D.M. Thomas are accused of spreading hatred among communities by publishing "Hakikat" (facts), which allegedly contains uncharitable references to some Hindu and Jain deities. "Hakikat", written by M.C. Mathew, has created tension in Rajasthan`s Kota town in recent weeks with some Hindu activists opposing it. The father-son duo was arrested March 16 by Kota police that had registered a complaint against them. The HI has sought contributions from its supporters for the "emergency legal defence fund" on its website. Police have also arrested three EMI employees and revoked the mission`s charity license. Authorities have sealed EMI`s offices and frozen their bank accounts. Kota police, meanwhile, claimed it had recovered all evidence suggesting the entire exercise of publishing the controversial book was carried out by the EMI. Samuel Thomas, however, has denied it, saying the organisation undertook only the distribution of the book
