London: February 10, 2014. (PCP) Witnesses and lawyers in the Shahbaz Bhatti murder trial have been threatened against appearing in court.
Nasir Saeed, director, CLAAS-UK has expressed his concern over the recent development in Shahbaz Bhatti’s murder trial.
Lawyers and witnesses in the case have been threatened and warned that they face the same fate as Bhatti if they appear in court to give evidence.
Mr Saeed said: “The whole world is watching Pakistan and I await the decision that will be made in Shahbaz’s murder trial.”
Although Shahbaz’s brother, and ex-minster Paul Bhatti has fled Pakistan, it is the government and court’s responsibility to fulfil their constitutional, legal and duties as the killer has already has admitted his crime.
Mr Saeed has said he fears that although Shahbaz’s killer has confessed the conclusion to his case will be no different to that of Salmaan Taseer’s murder case, where the culprit is enjoying hero status in jail.
He added: “The danger is that the world will never be able to see justice in these two cases and it will always be stigma on the forehead of Pakistan.”
Blasphemy laws in Pakistan are continuously being misused and those who are publicly supportive of amendments face constant backlash from extremists, while the perpetrators are hailed as heroes.
