JAMSHORO: January 25, 2014. (Imam Ali Bhalai) The Department of Pediatrics Liaquat University of Medical & Health Science Jamshoro in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF, MNCH Sindh organized a “Child Health Symposium” with the theme “Protect and Save the Children” on Saturday the 25th January 2014 at Hyderabad. While addressing at the Inaugural session Prof. Noshad A. Shaikh Vice Chancellor LUMHS expressed that each year worldwide hundreds of thousands of women die during pregnancy or childbirth and millions of children lose their lives before reaching the age of five. Many of these deaths can be prevented by proven, cost-effective, evidence-based interventions. We have to strengthen our health systems to improve service delivery to maternal, newborn and child health at the local level by training more health workers and increasing access to adequately equipped local health centers. He further added that better planning and management of child health programs is urgently needed. Although simple and effective interventions to reduce child deaths are available, these interventions are often not reaching the children who most need them. Programs that are well planned and managed are more likely to improve intervention coverage and reduce child deaths. Prof. Muhammad Akbar Nizamani expressed that many well-known prevention and treatment strategies have already proven effective for saving young lives. Childhood vaccinations have successfully reduced deaths due to measles. Oral rehydration therapy has contributed to a major reduction in diarrhea deaths. Effective antibiotics have saved millions of children with pneumonia. Prompt treatment of malaria has allowed more children to recover and lead healthy lives. Even modest improvements in breastfeeding practices have reduced childhood deaths.Prof. Dr. A.
