Lahore: January 25, 2014. (Fr.Inayat Bernard) 20th January 2014: During the week of prayer for Ecumenical Unity, Ecumenical Solidarity Committee and Council for Interfaith Dialogue organized a one day seminar for Church Leaders in the auditorium of United Christian Hospital Lahore. More than 100 clergy men and women including Catholic priests, pastors, catechists and female leaders attended the seminar.
Objective of the seminar was to bring closer the leaders and faithful of different denominations and preach the Word of God according to new demands and new evangelization. Fr. Morris Jalal OFM Cap was the main speaker of this glorious seminar.
After a brief introduction of the objective of the seminar Fr. Morris Jalal posed a question to the audience of the seminar; Why the celebration of unity? The 17th Chapter of St. John‘s Gospel is the answer, the prayer of Jesus Christ in the last hours of His earthly life. Fr. Morris said that the last words of anyone’s life are always remembered by all means. Jesus Christ wished that they may be one. Father, Son and we (Church) is a beautiful triangle.
Talking about the theme of the unity Octave Has Christ been divided he said He is not but we are divided and today there are 36,000 denominations around the world.
If we, the heads of mainline churches, have to confront this question then we start with organized efforts for effective evangelization. The diversity is found in human being and not oneness or uniformity. It is not possible to be different. To have a different thinking is not something negative, the beauty in not in uniformity but in plurality.
He said that the world religions came to be known by one person. To begin any religion the initiative is taken by one person. Founders give a spirit, thinking, a way to work for truth. Jesus Christ is the way, truth and life. He is very much our centre.
Commenting on not accepting the ground reality, he said that when the birds do not find food they fly to other areas. Likewise our faithful go to other places of worship because we are unable to quench their thirst of the Word of God. He stressed, we need to be equipped to spread the Word of God with solid preparation for Sunday homilies and have a regular contact with the faithful. Our faithful can be divided very easily. How do we deal and what shall we do. We have to find out the solution and I am not here to give you solution. He ended by saying that somehow or the other we have to bridge the gap and continue to serve our people more effectively.
Dr. Emmanuel Issac Bhatti, the director of United Christian Hospital said in his words of welcome that it is a beautiful morning when the people of God have come to UCH and we hope that we shall be able to bring light to this country and be witness.
He informed that church leaders bought this piece of land in 1958 and in 1964 this hospital was established. At that time this hospital was the second place in the world to process the open heart surgery. In 1965 the first heart surgery took place in South Africa. Let us rebuild this hospital. If we do not take care of the UCH building and administration, how can the others benefit. Dr. Bhatti informed the church leaders that one container is at the port and we are looking for the exemption. The renovation has taken place. The active cooperation is needed from the church leaders to ask their faithful to come to their own home. It is our home, the home of each one of us.
Fr. Inayat Bernard said that from October 2012 onwards we organized different programs at different churches. He said that by conducting the Church leaders’ seminar at UCH, it is expected that more patients will come here.
Fr. Francis Nadeem OFM Cap, the coordinator of the Ecumenical Unity Committee thanked while thanking the participants and speakers wished that this seminar has helped us to reflect our pastoral life to make it attractive and effective so that we may not leave any gap between us and our people.
Winding up the panel discussion for effective pastoral work Bishop Manu Romal Shah emiratus of Peshawar said that to spread the Word of God we need to be committed and dedicated in our convictions and express them through our words and actions.
Host and chaplain of UCH Rev. Amjad Niamat recited Psalm 133 about the brothers coming together, while Fr. Samson Dilawar said the prayer. The UCH choir led the prayer service prior to seminar and all joined in the festive lunch which helped them to grow in their fraternal and united relationships.
