Germany: December 1, 2013. (PCP) The winners of the 6th International Bremen Peace Award 2013 have been chosen. An Argentinian human rights activist, an initiative against slave labour in Pakistan and two distinguished anti-nuclear activists from Gorleben receive the prize awarded by the schwelle.
Natalia Sarapura is honoured as the “Unknown Peace Worker”. The indigenous Argentinian has been fighting for the rights of the Kolla, an Indian people in northwestern Argentina, for the last 18 years with the aid of a unique development concept. She and her colleagues successfully resisted the state in its attempt to sell indigenous territory to owners of large estates and international mining companies. Furthermore, Natalia Sarapura campaigns persistently for improved educational opportunities and living conditions for the Indian population of Argentina.
The peace award in the category “Exemplary Organization” goes to the “Insan Dost Association” from Pakistan. The initiative campaigns for the end of slave labour, which although in fact forbidden in Pakistan, is still widespread. Millions of people, including a great number of children, suffer the consequences of bonded labour. They work in agriculture, the fishing industry, refuse disposal, quarries and in the production of bricks under degrading conditions. The initiative makes those affected aware of their rights and encourages them to found trade unions in order to break through the cycle of poverty and repression.
The award for public engagement goes to Andreas Earl of Bernstorff and Anna Countess of Bernstorff from Gartow in Wendland / Germany. The courageous couple and their children have been resisting the Castor transportation with nuclear waste and nuclear policy for more than 35 years. They refused to sell their share of the salt deposit – a third of the area after all – and turned down a compensation payment of 30 million German marks. What is more, they repeatedly draw attention to their concern using peaceful and creative anti-nuclear actions.
