GCIC condemns burning of effigy of President of CBCI,

New Delhi: The Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC) expresses its deep concern at the burning of effigy of His Eminence Cardinal Telesphore Toppo in Jharkhand. We are distressed at this act of burning of the effigy of a religious leaders who has made his great contribution to the upliftment of tribals in the State. Nothing can justify this act as this is totally against the ethos of our country where religious leaders are respected by one and all. It is alleged that the effigy of Cardinal Toppo is being burnt in order to protest against the forced conversion of Tribals to Christianity. We strongly protest against the burning of effigy of Cardinal Toppo and appeal to the Government to take stern action against those who are found doing this disdainful act. We urge the people involved in such act to stop harming religious leader who is well acclaimed by his own people and by others in the country. As we informed the federal Government of India in an earlier letter, we fear that the total number of incidents of violence against Christians in the country in the year 2005 may be as many as 200, a large number of them in the Udaipur division of Rajasthan and in parts of MadhyaPradesh, Maharashra, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. Our appeals to State governments have been in vain. In many cases, local political leaders and officials is part of he conspiracy of violence. The National Commission for Minorities remains a silent spectator and is Chairperson has given us cause to suspect his own attitude towards Christians, a minority that his Commission is sworn to protect. Christian Tribal of Jhabua still in Jail while their tormentors roams free: 14 Christian members are in a Madhya Pradesh jail for the past2 years. They were arrested during the riots of 2004. They are all innocent Christian poor illiterate tribal and their families of all these people are in pitiable state. At least three legislators from Hindu radical groups are involved in the violence together with some Sadhvis (Radical Hindu women activists) of the RSS who had come from Gujarat and took part in the violence. They remain free. Situation in Rajasthan: As far as Christians are concerned, there seems to be a free season against them in this state. This is so both in tribal areas, and in urban places such as Ajmer, Kota and Jaipur. The police and the political apparatus are entirely supportive of the Hindu radical
