ISLAMABAD — A long-running dispute over land designated for a Christian cemetery in Islamabad has raised concerns about the protection of min
There is one my friend from Lahore. He was employed with the Pakistan Railways. During the partition of India, his in-laws had migrated to East Pakistan from Madras, with the fervent hope that the newly created state for the Muslims would offer a better protection and identity. The reason for not migrating to West Pakistan, could be due to their main staple food - rice and East Pakistanis are rice eaters!
His father-in-law can speak Urdu, where as his mother-in-law can speak only Tamil. When my Lahore friend was married he was in East Pakistan and later on got a transfer to his native place, Lahore, while his in-laws continued to live in East Pakistan.
He lost touch with his in-laws after 26 March 1971, as East Pakistan declared independence from the West Pakistan. Even after the creation of Bangladesh he did not here any news from his in-laws. Hence, he had tried to trace them through diplomatic channels and the officials of Bangladesh declared that all non-Bengali speak speaking people in that locality were massacred during the Bengali Nationalist rioting.
When he narrated his story, my Lahore friend was in tears. His in-laws were displaced from Madras because of religious fundamentalism, only to become a victim of linguistic fundamentalism later.
Doesn`t the story of the in-laws of my Lahore friend teach us the danger of fundamentalism in any form?
Please pray, so that fundamentalism in all forms are wiped out of South Asia and let this region be a model for pluralism and co-existence.
