Sangla Hill Incident. By Kenneth Messy, Jaag News

As Pakistan recovers from the major earthquake, no less than a disaster struck Sangla Hill where schools, churches, homes, and hostels of Pakistani Christians were destroyed. Is there any reason or any cause that can justify these notorious actions carried out on the innocent and poor Christians? Are people so intolerant or are people just puppets to leaders who enforce and preach hatred? What triggers these kinds of actions? Indeed this raises whole lot of questions that no one may have an answer for. Looking back in history, like incidents of Shantinagar, Bahawalpur and going further back when the principle on which foundation of Pakistan was laid some thing doesn't quite add up. Quaid-i-Azam, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the Father of the new Nation, before the First Session of the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan, on 11 August 1947 announced: "Everyone of you, no matter to what community he belongs, no matter what relations he had with you in the past, no matter what is his colour, caste or creed is first, second and last a citizen of this State with equal rights, privileges and obligations, there will be no end to the progress you will make... You are free; you are free to go to your temples, you are free to go to your mosques or any other place of worship in this State of Pakistan... You may belong to any religion or caste or creed that has nothing to do with the business of the State.... We are starting in the days when there is no discrimination, no distinction between one community and another, no discrimination between one caste or creed and another. We are starting with this fundamental principle that we are all citizens and equal citizens of one State." Way forward or, let me fast forward to into future! Is these tolerance, love, peace and harmony? President General Pervez Musharraf condemned the violence in Sangla Hill and urged all communities of the area to show tolerance. There has been indication of rebuilding the facilities that were destroyed. Only time will tell, if time will heal or these infectious atrocities are repeated. Lack of tolerance could destroy Pakistan as nation. However tolerance is often preached at end of these kinds of events, when the root causes are not addressed. The colour white, which symbolises purity, cleanliness, truth and represents the minority in the flag of Pakistan is surely a challenge in its own existence to give minority the equal rights, respect and justice they rightfully deserve as proud Pakistani Christians.
