HUJ President under threat of Brothel keepers

HYDERABAD: March 12,2013: President Hyderabad Union of Journalists Farhan Effendi who is also bureau chief of ARY TV channel has constantly been under threat by the infamous vice den that is run in Tando Mir Mahmood with patronisation and involvement of high police officers and politicians of the area. The vice den is running at above area of the city since last more than 25 years where the minor girls are brought,purchased and sold at this den which is running freely without check from any quarter or authority. Few days earlier a team of ARY TV channel led by its Hyderabad bureau chief Farhan Effendi and Iqrarul Hassan host of Sar-e-Aam raided this vice den where the den keepers and policemen attacked the media team in which 6 members of the team including Danyal, Kamran and Faizan while Umair and Farhan also received injuries. Farhan Effendi told this correspondent that when their team raided the vice den they were attacked by 50 armed men who were led by police constable Wahid Bux Khoso. He told that the team heard screams of young girls who were forced to entertain the customers in brothel. He was told that the vice den including 3 dens of narcotics,alkohol and Ganja (charas)gambling, sata and flesh trade dens are running under protection of a local influential politician who receives Rs.25 lacs every week while police receives 37 lacs including 25 lacs to SSP office and 12 lacs to SHO Phuleli. Various organizations are also appeased by paying 10 lacs to them. Effendi told that their team had raided only one den of Sher Khan Pathan where they were resisted and attacked. After the story was flashed in media the new SSP Muhammad Masoom has taken action by stationing the police force with a armoured vehicle on that spot where the flash trade, narcotics and gambling dens have come down for time being but the supply of narcotics and girls was said to be carrying in other areas of city. MPA Waseem Hussain who belongs to MQM commenting on the incident said that because the area of Tando Mir Mahmood where vice dens are working is predominantly a Sindhi speaking area and if he or his party takes any action against this menace it will might be given the ethnic colour. However he said he has raised voice against it in Sindh assembly but of no avail. Farhan Effendi who was vice president of Hyderabad press club in 2011 when armed guards of Zulfiqar Mirza had attacked him in press club common room during the press conferece of Miraz on asking a tough question. The armed men of Mirza beat him and broke his teeth. Effendi has also suffered jails in 1995 and was subjected to torture in jail while raising voice for rights of jouranalists. Effendi was feeling fright on receiving threats from the vice den holders. He told this correspondent that under such circumstances of fright and fear he was thinking of leaving Pakistan. However civil society members of Hyderabad have condemned the running of vice dens and threats by keepers to Effendi who is leader of journalist community affiliated with Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists. Consule General of UK Francis Cable got information from Effendi and few members of sensitive institutions have also expressed grave concern on the threats to Effendi and have asked government to provide protection to him and his family.
