Rice Cultivation is major threat to Mohen-Jo-Daro sites

LARKANA: February 13, 2013. (Nazir Siyal) Sindh Culture Department organized an awareness rally to save Mohen-Jo-Daro followed by “media and public sensitization” workshop here at Mohenjo Daro rest House on Wednesday Sindh Culture and Tourism Director Qasim Ali Qasim led a large number of media and civil society representatives from rest House to Stupa Mohenjo Daro and hosted the Media and pulic sensitization workshop. The participants carrying banner and raised slogans to save Mohenjo Daro and proper demarcation of the sites of DK area, VS area and other parts of archaeological areas and boundaries according to the world heritage demand they said. On the occasion, the experts, engineers and curators of the sites among Shamsuddin Jatoi, Ghulam Hussain Burdi, senior Journalists Altaf Pirzado, Abdul Haq, Nazir Siyal, Monis Bukhari, Ali Hyder Gadhi and others presented their recommendations to the authorities. Speaking to the session, it was highlighted that rice cultivation is a major threat to the Mohenjo Daro all four corners of the sites, so that the demarcation should be finalized and protected by a boundary around and removed all possessions and illegal villages, it is because of urea chemical, salinity and water level issues during crop seasons the told. To save Mohen-jo-Daro remains by paths, ways, routes inside the DK area, VS area and other archaeological sites due to vandalism by a large number of visitors on different occasions. The workshop participants also stressed that technical committee of Endowment Fund for Mohenjo Daro should utilize saved amount Rs. 200 million amounts released by Chief Minister Sindh for proper establishment and preservation on the sites they said. They also said that the technical committee should maintain law and order situation and major threats to Mohenjo Daro sites, positively observation of archaeological backgrounds evaluation with failures and success they said. The workshop participants mutually recommended various points to the authority for a proper training of staffs, labours and local guides at Mohenjo Daro, sweet water for the visitors and staff should be provided at the Mohenjo Daro. While an awareness through the media and civil society workshops as well as campaign on Eid days and other festivities will be a meaningful on the occasion. The participants also recommended that a permanent Media Coordinator should be appointed to highlight proper issues of Mohenjo Daro development and awareness of common visitors on the occasion, added that the staff and volunteers should be a trained at the sites they demanded.
