US supporting the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt: F-16 fighter jets to be sent despite crisis. By Boutros Hussein, Joachim de Villiers and Lee Jay Walker

The United States under President Obama is clearly showing its bias towards the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. It appears that the frailty of the current situation in Egypt alongside the possible threat of a militant Islamist takeover of power means little in Washington. Therefore, the first batch of F-16 fighter jets will commence in January 2013 when the first four of twenty military aircraft will be delivered. Originally, this agreement was made with the old order in Egypt but given the current political crisis in this nation then clearly the Obama administration could have back tracked if desired. Yet instead of putting blocks in the way it is onward and forward between Washington and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. Sadly, this reality means that the Obama administration is paying little attention to events on the ground because currently you have mass political instability in Egypt. It also highlights the fraudulent farce of President Mursi (Morsi) and the real reality of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood when it relates to Gaza. After all, on the one hand Mursi condemns Israel but on the other hand he will take in more American military arms which are also used against the Palestinians in Gaza. At the same time “the Muslim Brotherhood begging bowl” is being aided by America, the European Union and several Gulf states. Given this reality, the recent Gaza crisis highlights the duplicity of the Muslim Brotherhood which plays “the Palestinian card,” while supporting the ongoing American militarization of the armed forces of Egypt which will come with strings attached. Malou Innocent, analyst at the Cato Institute, comments that “Should an overreaction [by Egypt] spiral into a broader conflict between Egypt and Israel, such a scenario would put U.S. officials in an embarrassing position of having supplied massive amounts of military hardware … to both belligerents…Given Washington’s fiscal woes, American taxpayers should no longer be Egypt’s major arms supplier.” However, while any scenario is possible, especially with such volatility in the Sinai region; it is difficult to imagine the Muslim Brotherhood becoming entangled with Israel apart from possible tensions in the Sinai. If nationalist forces or more independent political movements rise up in Egypt, then a possible clash with Israel could be on the cards in order to cement the independent nature of this nation outside of the duality of Mubarak and Mursi. In America, it appears that the Camp David agreement and the need to comply with Saudi Arabia is part and parcel of the foreign policy of America. Once more, the plight of Coptic Christians, women, secularists, modernists, socialists, pan-Arabists, and other movements – irrespective of size – appear to be secondary issues providing Egypt and Israel maintain feasible relations and Washington can protect Saudi Arabia at all costs. The catalyst of the current crisis is based on Mursi who appeared to believe that he could install draconian new political powers at the expense of checks and balances. For many Egyptians, it appears that Mursi desires to start a path which would directly lead to a dictatorship and an Islamist state which would turn the clock back. After all, if you read the comments made by the founding fathers of this Islamist organization, then clearly the usurpation of power was part of the indoctrination of lay members before they moved up the ladder within this organization. In the New York Times, Roger Cohen, comments that “Perhaps the most radical change in U.S. foreign policy under President Obama has occurred here in Egypt, where the Muslim Brotherhood, long shunned as a collection of dangerous Islamist extremists, is now the de facto object of American support….. Not only that: Ultraconservative Salafist politicians, who make the Brotherhood seem like moderate pragmatists, are now regular visitors to the U.S. Embassy and, on the theory that it is better to have them inside the tent than out, they are able to visit the United States to learn how things work in the land of Jeffersonian democracy.” Therefore, Saudi Arabia, which doesn’t allow one single Christian, Buddhist, Hindu and Sikh holy place of worship, must be pleased by Obama’s policy of supporting the Sunni Islamist cause in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Syria. Likewise, the same applies to the Erdogan government in Turkey which desires to crush secularism by stealth. Therefore, Islamists can openly slaughter in Syria while being supported covertly by forces in Washington, London and Paris which are all working for the Ankara, Riyadh and Doha agenda. This reality means that even when Mursi is clamping-down against Egyptian people and whereby he is trying to alter the power dynamics by stealth; the political elites within the Obama administration appear to be in compliant mode and tacit approval mode. leejay@moderntokyotimes.com http://moderntokyotimes.com
