Hyderabad: December 10, 2012. (Abbas Kassar) A separate Ministry for the abolition of bonded labor system be established and a rehabilitation fund be allocated provincially for more than 5700 annually freed bonded labour and peasants in the province.
Social security card be provided to all the labourers especially those 0.2 Million labourers working in brick kiln sector. This was stated by Kashif Bajeer National Manager SPARC while addressing the rally on universal Human Rights Day. He expressed his deep concern over no initiatives by the government for the solution of problems faced by labourers, whereas the Legal Aid Service Unit established in Sindh to address the issues and grievances has been closed.
More than 5000 children working in Brick kilns situated at Tando Haider are deprived of their basic right to education which a violation Article 25-A of Constitution. He demanded of the government to establish schools in the brick kiln sector and provide basic facilities in the freed bonded labour camps.
A grand rally have been organized by SPARC on Universal Human Rights Day in connection with world day for the abolition of slavery, from Tando Haider to Press Club Hyderabad with the support of ActionAid and European Union, in which more than five thousand freed bonded laborers, men and women, children, civil society activists, trade union activists, journalists, and members of bar Association also participated.
While addressing the rally Punhal Sariyo demanded of the government of Sindh to amend, adopt and implement bonded labour system abolition act 1992 with letter and spirit to curb injustice done to labourers in the province. He pointed out that today common labourers get 1000 per day whereas the entire family working on the brick kiln gets just 380 for thousand brick per day. He demanded that Sindh minimum wage board should issue notice for brick worker and 1000 be fixed for one thousand bricks.
Addressing the Rally the Regional Head Of SPO, Ghulam Mustafa Balouch said that there are more than 25000 kiln workers working on 150 brick kilns at Tando Haider but none have been provided with social security right whereas the laws are clear that any establishment having more than 5 employees will be registered with social security department and there are more than 150 workers at each and every brick kiln, no one is ready to raise voice for their rights. He asked the print and electronic media journalist to play their role and visit the brick sector, see their plight with the eye of camera, show the government the real face of poverty.
Speaking at the rally Mr. Mehboob Abro Ex-Nazim Qasimabad and the representative of Pakistan Peoples Party said that the increase in bonded labour in our society is because of poverty, hunger and unemployment. No Brick kiln worker in entire Sindh has received social security card where there are more than 0.2 Million workers in this sector. The Social Security Department has turned its eyes closed toward the rights of labourers. Without the justice with laborer, the just and peaceful society cannot be established.
All Sindh Mahinatkash Batha Mazdoor Union President Punhoo Bheel said that labourers are pushed into the quagmire of advance loan. The entire families on the brick kiln do not earn as much even to get medicine for their sick child. They are paying their bondage since their forefather but all are unable to pay it off. Today bonded laborers are freed through courts but government has no plan for their rehabilitation or any other help.
