Pakistan Christian Congress welcomes IHC decision to drop blasphemy charges against Rimsha

Islamabad: November 21, 2012. (PCP) Dr. Nazir S Bhatti, President of Pakistan Christian Congress PCC has applauded judgment of Islamabad High Court IHC to drop blasphemy charges against disabled minor Christian girl Rimsha Masih. Rimsha Masih, a Christian girl aged 14, patient of Down-syndrome, was arrested on August 16, 2012, under charges of 295 B and C PPC of blasphemy law from Mehrabad, a slum of capital city Islamabad, on complaint of Muslim cleric of local mosque that he have seen burnt pages of Muslim’s Holy Book Quran in her trash bag. On calls from mosque loudspeakers, the Muslim mob gathered in front of Rimsha Masih House and attacked her family. Muslim mob also set on fire three Churches in Mehrabad which forced 600 hundred Christian families to flee to nearby jungle to take refuge to save their lives. Rimsha Masih was granted bail from Adiala Jail Rawalpindi after two weeks when some Muslims stepped forward to testify that Imam of mosque planted burnt pages of Quran in bag of Rimsha Masih which he put in trash. Dr. Nazir Bhatti said that blasphemy law is being abused to settle scores against religious minorities in Pakistan and judgment on Rimsha Masih case have proved it. “PCC demands to reopen all cases lodged under blasphemy law against Christians, Hindus and Ahamdiyyia community individuals that justice may be ensured” said Nazir Bhatti Dr. Nazir Bhatti added that there are more than dozen innocent Christians behind bars waiting for their trials in blasphemy cases who have been accused on business rivalry or petty disputes with Muslim complainants Meanwhile, a freelance journalist Shamim Masih reports that Islamabad High Court (IHC) announced its verdict today on 20th November, 2012 and dismissed the First Investigation Report (FIR) filed against 14 years Rimsha, a Christian girl, and accused of committing blasphemy. According to Rimsha’s lawyer Abdul Hameed Rana, the verdict was announced on an application filed by him seeking quashment of the FIR against Rimsha. Earlier on November 14, the honorable chief justice IHC, Mr. Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman had reserved the judgment and announced it today.
