New York: October 3, 2012. (PCP) Several representatives of Pakistani-American Christian organizations met with Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to advocate for minorities and women in including them in Pakistan’s election process. Bilawal Bhutto along with his sister, Bakhtawar Bhutto, was in New York City to attend national convention of PPP USA where several hundred delegates were present from all over the country.
“Democracy is the best revenge [to dictatorship], your mother Benazir Bhutto would assert,” said Manny Alam, president of Pakistani-American Christian Association (PACA) from Philadelphia. “Why can’t this blessing of democracy be extended to minorities and women’s reserved seats?” he questioned.
Pakistan is the only country where 20% (70 out of 342) of its parliamentarians are chosen without a single vote. Personal favors and blind loyalties are used as criteria to select candidates to fill the reserved seats.
At present, Pakistan’s population is made up of 51% of women. In a discussion in May 2012 at US Institute of Peace, Bilawal Bhutto wished to have 50% of the parliamentarians as women, but never mapped out a strategy to attain such a cumbersome goal, in a country where a woman’s testimony is less than a man’s and rarely taken into consideration.
In reply to one of the questions asked by Bilawal Bhutto, Victor Gill (CVOP-PA) confirmed that under the present ‘selection system,’ the distribution of seats is uneven as there are only two Christian parliamentarians out of ten minority seats in the entirety of the National Assembly
At the end, William Shahzad, chairman of Pakistan Christian Association (PCA) of New York, handed Bilawal Bhutto an informative brief on the ongoing persecution of Christians in Pakistan.
