Pope urges more aid for Asian quake victims

VATICAN CITY. - Saying not enough had been done, Pope Benedict renewed calls on Sunday for the international community to swiftly and generously respond to this month`s earthquake centred in Pakistan. "There have been numerous kinds of solidarity, but the need appears much greater than the help offered so far. I renew, therefore, my appeal to the international community," the Pope told the faithful gathered in St. Peter`s Square for his weekly blessing. A U.N.-led effort to get food and shelter to survivors of the earthquake that killed more than 56,000 people, mostly in Pakistani Kashmir, has been hampered by landslides blocking many mountain roads. With the Himalayan winter just weeks away and more than three million people homeless or needing shelter, aid workers fear a similar number could die of hunger and exposure unless help reaches them quickly.
