Shutterdown and Wheel-Jam strike in Sindh on Local Government Ordinance

LARKANA/HYDERABAD: September 13, 2012. (Nazir Siyal) A complete shutterdwon and wheel-jam strike was observed in major districts of Sindh on the call of Save Sindh Committee (Sindh Bachayo Committee) by an alliance of nationalist parties and supported by political parties against new Peoples Local Government Ordinance 2012 by rulling PPP and MQM here on Thursday. According to the reports, different parts of Karachi among Gulshan-e-Maimar, Gulshan Hadeed, Maleer town, Bhains Colony, Khada Market and several other parts of metorlpolitan shutter-down strike was witnessed following the call by Nationalist parties against new Peoples Local Government Ordinance 2012, which is a political divide of province by the rulling PPP and MQM. While in major districts of province including Larkana, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Kamber-Shahdadkot, Dadu, Mehar, K. N Shah, Ratodero, Sijawal, Naushehro Feroz, Khairpur, Sukkur, Ghotki, Kandhkot, Kashmore, Sakrand, Kandiaro, Mirokhan, Naudero, Qubo Saeed Khan and other parts of Sindh was observed complete shutterdown and wheel jam strike. On the occasion, all business centers, markets Bazars, City Centers, cloth market and vegetable markets remained fully closed, petrol pumps, CNGs and other small and big markets remained shut down. Transport on the roads was found next to nil and the commuters had to face agonizing situation due to lack of transport, while after morning the public and private traffic was suspended on the roads. All private and several government schools were remained closed due to non-availability of transport and wheeljam strike in various districts of Sindh. A high level security was beefed up and Police deployed on entry and exit routes, chowks and sensitive points in several districts, cities to meet any untoward incident. The police arrested large number of nationalist workers and blocked them during protest and strike. In Larkana, traders’ community and citizens responded the protest call by different nationalist organizations and political parties against the promulgation of new local government ordinance 2012 to appease the MQM. All the business markets, shopping centers, main Bazars including the Shahi Bazar, Resham Gali, Sarafa Bazar, station road, Lahori Muhalla, Pakistani Chok, Royal Chok, Fish Market, Anaj Bazar, Fruit Mandi, Filling stations and others were completely remain closed. The communication between other cities of Sindh including the Larkana to Kamber Shahdadkot, Ratodero, Naudero, Bakrani, Dokri, Mehar, Dadu, Shikarpur and other cities were suspended due to complete wheeljam and shutterdown strike. While the JSQM, SUP, STP, PPP Shaheed Bhutto, SNP, National Peoples Party and other Political and Nationalist organizations took out their separate protest rallies against the black law and anti-Sindh elements. The rallies started from different locations after marching through various roads reached at Jinah Bagh Chowk and Press Club, where enraged protesting activists set the effigies of the rulers set on fires and burnt tyers. Police and Rangers had been deployed at various points to control any untoward situation on the occasion. On the occasion, police apprehended the 13 activists among the 4 JSQM workers. While in Mirpurkhas a nationalist worker was killed and several injured in a firing by the culprits. The aerial firing was witnessed in every city and districts, the police in whole the province blocked political workers against the protests said the reports. Advocates in the courts were boycotted and all the business was suspended due to strike. On the other hand various Nationalist parties’ as well political parties those announced support the strike, their workers came on the roads and took out rallies and burnt tyres and effigies. They also chanted slogans against the government ruling PPP and MQM. The attendance was very thin at private and government universities including Sindh, Mehran, Liaqat Medical colleges, Jamshoro Sindh University, Shah Abdul Latif University and other educational institutions remained closed. Nationalist parties of Sindh including Awami Tehreek (AT), Sindh Taraqi Passand Party (STP), Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM), Sindh United Party (SUP) and others along with Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Muslim League Functional (PML-F) and Awami National Party leaders have claimed that a complete province-wide shutter-down and wheel jam strike is the referendum against PPP and MQM decision of Sindh Peoples Local Government Ordinance 2012. Criticizing the decision, party leaders said that the PPP government had practically divided Sindh into two administrative systems, this step is to separate Sindh province and wide gape among the people of rural and urban, but they would resist against the new Peoples Local Government Ordinance 2012 and called for immediately withdraw the ordinance they said.
