(By Abbas Kassar) Welcoming the arrival of UN mission on enforced disappearances in Pakistan, chairman Jeay Sindh Mutehida Mahaz Shafi Muhammad Burfat has invited the mission members to investigate the cases of abduction and extra judicial killings of political activists of Jeay Sindh Mutehida Mahaz ( a group of Jeay Sindh movement that is working for freedom of Sindh from Pakistan under name of Sindhudesh).In an advertisement published in a Sindhi daily on 11 September 2012, Burfat has invited concern of UN mission towards abducted political workers of Sindhudesh who were kidnapped and brutally killed by law enforcement agencies and institutions of Pakistan since 2002 in which most of members of central committee of his party were kidnapped, tortured and killed brutally. These included Muzaffar Bhutto, Sirai Khuhawar Qurban, Samiullah Kalhoro, Rooplo Cholyani, Noorullah Tunio, Zulfiqar Kolachi, Qureshi Bashir, Nadir Bugti, Mushtaq Khaskheli, Majid Memon, Abbasi Asad and Sandelo Babar.He mentioned names of 42 other workers who were abducted and tortured and has said that scores of Jeay Sindh activists were still in captivity of government institutions and facing inhuman torture. They include Zakir Bozdar, Akbar Dakhan, Illah Bux Markhand, Nawaz Leghari, Imran Jokhyo and others. He has also said that Sindh is land of peace, tolerance and sofism but state was trying to impose religious ideology over Sindh people and for that purpose it has brought various religious groups in action including Haqqani network, Lashkar Tayyaba,etc. Burfat has asked UN mission “to investigate these cases of abductions and extra judicial killings of political workers of his party and other groups of Jeay Sindh movement and to take notice of all brutalities of state against their activists.
It may be mentioned here that a high level UN mission on enforced disappearances had arrived in Pakistan last Sunday on a fact finding mission of missing persons. The mission had requested Chief Justice Pakistan Chowdhry Iftikhar for meeting but he declined their request. Supreme Court official through a letter to foreign ministry informed that as the cases of missing persons were pending in the apex court, propriety demanded that CJP may not discuss the matter which is subjudice. The mission has now asked foreign ministry to arrange its meeting with military authorities in connection with missing persons. The military agencies are alleged to have been involved in kidnapping political activists of Sindh and Balochistan, torturing them and then throwing their dead bodies before their homes. According to Shafi Burfat as many as 14 of his party alone were kidnapped and killed by agencies. Scores are still missing. On Monday the mission met with Defence of Human Rights chairperson Ms. Amina Masood Janjua who had reported informed the team about involvement of military intelligence agencies in his husband's abduction.
A member of national assembly from Muslim League (N) has said that they wanted to meet the UN team and to breif them on the issue of missing persons as according to him the issue was serious but the government was hushing up it. he said " as Balochistan was burning, families of hundreds of missing persons need justice, it is time to heal their wounds and take up issue for immediate redress. Muslim League ( Quaid) and Tehrik Insaff of Imran Khan have shown interest to meet the team which is due to visit Balochistan in a couple of days after receiving security update. Since May last 2 top human rights officials have visited Pakistan and expressed serious concern on alleged role of Pakistan military intelligence agencies in the abduction and killings of civilians specially in Balochistan. The 4 members of United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) consists of Olivier De Frouvile chair reportier, Osman Al-Hajjie,Ugo Sedrangulo and Aalia n-Khatib is on a 10 day probe mission to Pakistan.
