Church renovation in conundrum after objection by area Muslims

Lahore: August 18, 2012. (Asif Aqeel) Putting in of windows in the building of Full Gospel Church (FGA) in Lahore has been halted after the area Muslims picked a fight with the church administration, the Center for Law and Justice (CLJ) has learned. This FGA church administration is currently seeking help from politically influential persons to settle the matter. The church committee – consisting of Hadayyat Masih, Binyamin Masih, Samuel Hadayyat, Wilson Masih, Gulzar Masih, Yousuf Masih and few other church members – decided to make two windows in one wall of the church building for ventilation. Construction of windows for cross ventilation is only possible on one wall because there are houses on the two sides of the church. Samuel Hadayyat, a member of church committee, told CLJ that the church attendance had increased to 400 in the Sunday service and it was quite suffocating in summer with this number tightly packed in a small hall. He said on August 2 the administration began construction work on the church wall in view of comfort of the church members. He said laborers installed a window by evening which opens up in a street. He said the laborers began work on the second window at around 8pm when women of Mustafa family objected. He said women told the laborers that they would not allow them installing windows at any cost [Having windows that open up in the street is not unusual in Pakistan]. After the Muslim women halted construction on the church wall, the matter was taken up with few respectable Muslims of the area but they could not help. Then the Christians went to the Assembly of Punjab member Naseer Ahmed on August 12. Ahmed assured them that they should resume construction and they should not be harassed by the area Muslims. When on August 16 laborers again began construction work on the second window, the area Muslims phoned Rescue 15 police who arrived in a short while. The police told the church administration to come to the Factory Area Police Station, Walton, Lahore in the evening. The church administration contacted Ahmed who stopped them from going to the police station and asked to allow him few days to resolve the matter amicably with the Muslims creating problem. This branch of the FGA denomination was set up in around 1972 and since then Christians of the area worship here. The CLJ has learned that about three years ago the church administration wanted to repair the boundary wall and the Muslim area residents objected over it too. The Christians requested some politically influential Muslims at that time and after their intervention church wall could be repaired. (Director CLJ Asif Aqeel says that if the matter does not amicably resolves then the CLJ will help the church administration take the matter to the court)
