India: July 20, 2012. (PCP) Indira Kala Sangit University (IKSU) officially established the Centre for Stephen Gill Studies on April 21, 2012 in an impressive gathering of intellectuals. The gathering was chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Mandvi Singh. She called it a historical move of the university to establish this centre for scholars to pursue their higher studies on Stephen Gill. Professor Dr. Tiwari, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Head of English Department, said that in the world of today the creative work of Stephen Gill occupies a meaningful place. His epical poem The Flame that is about maniac messiahs, and his novel The Coexistence that provides a blueprint to live and let live, will be read and analyzed again and again by readers and literary critics. Those who are working and plan to work at the higher level on the creative contributions of Stephen Gill will find this centre as one stop gateway for their myriad scholarly needs on the university campus. The Department of English has several plans to make this centre more useful for scholars. Stephen Gill thanked Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Mandvi Singh, adding she is a vibrant soul behind the vibrant life of this University in Khairagarh. She has an extensive list of publications and a number of university degrees. She has strength, stamina and dedication to art and to serve the community of artists. He is sure that under the care of a recognized gifted artist, the Centre will grow and become an ideal resort for scholars to work in a peaceful atmosphere. Indira Kala Sangit University (IKSU) was established by the ancestors of Vice Chancellor Professor Mandvi Singh. The late King Brindera Bahadur Singh and Her Majesty, the late Rani Padmavati Devi, had a daughter by the name of Indira. She died at an early age. Princess Indira had a genuine passion for music. In 1956 they donated their palace to establish Indira Kala Sangit University for the promotion of music and visual arts, naming the University after their daughter. The University is located in Khairagarh in the province of Chhattisgarh, India. Shukla, author of several books, former head of the Department of English of a college and a respectable poet and literary critic, writes in The Flame Unmasked about Stephen Gill’s epical poem The Flame: Extremely rich in symbolism and the use of imagery, Gill’s poem is an evidence of his astonishing merits as a poet. The use of new adjectives and nouns from the beginning to the end is sure to establish Stephen Gill as a poet par excellence. It is certain that no poet of England wrote poetry with such a rich stock of imagery except John Milton in his Paradise Lost and Samson Agonists. In her unique paper THE COEXISTENCE: From Style to Structure and Meaning, assistant professor at the university of Arad in Romania who has translated the Flame, and also the Coexistence into Romanian language with the help of her students says, The Coexistence can be ranked among novels such as, Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, The Way of All Flesh by Samuel Butler, The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.
