Islamabad: June 19, 2012. (PCP) Senior parliamentarian and Chairman ,National Assembly’s Standing committee on Human rights, Mr. Riaz Fatyana MNA , has been arrested today in Kamalia, Toba tek Singh, .He along with his political supporters has been kept in Police station ,Rijhana, District Toba Tek Singh. Earlier ,a group of his political opponents allegedly led by PML-N activists attacked his house and burnt his office and car . On his request of police protection , District Police Officer ,instead of providing him protection , disarmed his guards and gave the attackers a free access to his office ,who then burned and destroyed his property.,,,In this riot , many persons got injured ….District Police officer on behest of Regional Police officer Faislabad, ordered local police to arrest Mr. Fatyana and now they are trying to implicate him in some false case. This all is result of a planned move backed by his political opponents ( PML_N) because they are afraid of his popularity and cannot face him directly in a democratic electoral process. Mr. Riaz Fatyana is a senior politician and has served on various important portfolios during his 35 years long political career. Currently ,he is Member of National assembly of Pakistan and as Chairman National assembly’s first ever Standing Committee on Human Rights , he has done a lot for promotion and protection of Human rights in the country .He has been a very vocal critic on Pakistan’s policing system and has raised the issue of police high handed ness and police brutalities many times during committee meetings. Famous cases of killings of 5 chechens by FC in Kharotabad, quetta ,murder of sarfraz shah by rangers in Karachi ,,,killings of 7 innocent citizens in Abbotabad are still on the agenda of standing committee on Human rights. He also ,for the first time ,,initiated the process of involving citizen’s groups and CSO’s in committee hearings and meetings ,and invited reputed organisation like HRCP, Aurat Foundation ,PCHR, SHARP etc to particiopate in HR committee meetings. In previous meeting, He took serious notice of life threats to Renowned Human Rights Activist Ms Asma Jahangir, and summoned high security officials from ministry of defence and Interior to parliamentary committee’s next meeting on 21st June to explain their position in this regard. All Civil Society friends are requested to raise their voice against this arrest and show solidarity with Mr.Riaz Fatyana . Parliamentarians Commission for Human rights (PCHR) highly condemns this act of Punjab Police. An emergency meeting of leading human rights organizations and CSO’s will be convened tomorrow in PCHR office to discuss the situation and finalize the plan of protest. Afterwards, a joint press conference will be addressed to share this protest plan with public and other stake organizations.
