Washington DC: April 15, 2012. (R.E.A.L.) On a windy Saturday April 14, 2012, in Washington D.C., human rights activists called upon the Pakistan government, Pakistan courts, U.S.-Pakistan Business Council and its member companies, and the Pakistan people to support the universal human rights of minorities in Pakistan, including Pakistan Hindus, Pakistan Christians, and Pakistan Ahmadiyya and Other Minority Muslims. The human rights activists, representing a cross-section of diverse American identity groups, shared a common concern on the universal human rights for all women and all people. The human rights activists sought to send a message to the Pakistan courts meeting on Wednesday April 18 that they supported freedom for 19 year old Hindu girl Rinkle Kumari. Her family reported that she was kidnapped and forced to convert away from her Hindu faith. The human rights activists support freedom of religion and freedom of conscience for all people. Activists spoke on her case, chanting "Free, Free Rinkle Kumari!" They also spoke on the case of other religious minorities. They passed our flyers on the subject and urged the public to contact the Pakistan Embassy (202-243-6500, info@embassyofpakistanusa.org) and let them know their position on these issues. They called for end to forced marriage and forced religious conversion in Pakistan, as against our fellow human beings' universal human rights and as affront to women's rights around the world. Human rights activists have urged the public to sign an online petition indicating their solidarity with Hindu girl Rinkle Kumari.Ahmar Mustikhan spoke on the case of Rinkle Kumari and of other Hindus, Christians, and Ahmadi Muslims being oppressed in Pakistan by the hundreds. Dr. Nazir Bhatti described how Rinkle Kumari was being held at a women's homeless shelter rather being given the right to return to her family and her faith. Laurie Deamer urged the U.S. Government to be responsible in this case and demand that Pakistan aid be contingent on its consistent support for universal human rights for women and all of its citizens. Human Rights Activists Call for Freedom for Hindu Girl Rinkle Kumari, and Rights for Pakistan Hindus, Christians, Minority Muslims, and All People - Groups included: Responsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.), Pakistan Christian Congress, American Friends of Balochistan, and United 4 Equality Human rights activists held the rally in front of the U.S.-Pakistan Business Council (202-463-5732, uspbc@uschamber.com) and urged the council and its American members to use its influence to help promote human rights in Pakistan. The human rights activists expressed thanks for a statement of support on human rights by PepsiCo, which is one of the businesses on the council's board. PepsiCo stated that it "strongly supports fundamental human rights for all people, and we commend the efforts of all those who are working to protect those rights around the world. In our own businesses, we have a very clear global policy on human rights in the workplace (which is communicated annually to our associates in more than 20 languages), and we do not tolerate any infringement or abuse of human rights. In addition, we are a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact, which also guarantees human rights in the workplace." Human rights activist groups at the rally included: Pakistan Christian Congress (Dr. Nazir Bhatti), American Friends of Balochistan (Ahmar Mustikhan and Laurie Deamer), United 4 Equality (Carolyn Cook and Maureen Gehrig Cook), and Responsible for Equality And Liberty - R.E.A.L. (Jeffrey Imm and his wife). At the end of the rally, the human rights activists left the primary rally site and marched with their signs around the surrounding Washington D.C. area, in Lafayette Park, and in front of the White House, sharing the news of the case of Rinkle Kumari with other concerned people.
