DOST organize workshop on “Promotion of democracy & human rights for youth empowerment”

Faisalabad: March 27, 2012. (PCP) On 17-18 March 2012, a capacity building training workshop was organized on “Promotion of democracy and human rights for youth empowerment” by Development organization for social transformation (DOST) in collaboration with Sindh community foundation (SCF) at Harmony foundation school, Nawaz Park, Street # 3, Faisalabad. Over 30 female and male youth participated in the workshop while Professor Bashir Ahmed (Consultant Intermedia & Sarsbaz foundation), Mr. George Clement (Director LEAF organization & Ex-Parliamentarian), Mr. Zubair (Advocate & trainer) and Mr. Atif Jameel Pagaan (Director, Harmony Foundation) were among the facilitators of the workshop. The content of the training included; Democracy and its frameworks, Democracy and development, Human rights Principles of human rights, Characteristics of human rights, Role of youth activists in protecting human rights, Analysis of human rights situation in Pakistan in context of constitution and UHDR, Constitutional human rights in Pakistan, Concept and definition of good governance, Responsibility and Accountability, Rule of law , social justice and Equity and Role of youth to improve governance situation. INTRODUCTION: First day of the workshop started with the introduction of the participants and facilitators. This introductory session was facilitated by Ms. Julia Mehboob (Chairperson-Dost Organization). After the brief introduction Ms. Julia Mehboob shared aims and objectives of the training, and convened the all sessions of the training. Participants were asked about their concern and expectation regarding the training workshop. So the concern and expectation were discussed in the introductory session. PROFESSOR BASHIR AHMED: He shared the concept of democracy and human rights in detail. He shared main articles of UDHR and said that HDHR is mother of laws. It is adopted by united nation on 10-10-1948 and now there are 192 countries are members of united nation. UDHR is ethical binding but there are some other conventions that are legal bindings between UN and member state. Every state party after signing and ratifying the convention is responsible to implement in the country and responsible to submit the report after every three years. Almost 8 core treaties have been signed and ratified by Pakistan but it is not reporting properly. He also shared the current situation of human rights in Pakistan and said that there is many kind of discrimination in the society. Many outmoded costumes and traditions are in practice. Street crimes, honor killing, kidnapping, rape, gang rape and robberies are the daily routine. The situation of women rights is also very miserable in Pakistan. Women are facing gender discrimination and violence in the society he added. MR. GEORGE CLEMENT He shared the concept of democracy and said that human right can only promote in a democratic society. He shared some types of governance like as, monocracy, autocracy, theocracy and democracy. The constitution of Pakistan provides many fundamental freedoms to every citizen. We can avail all fundamental freedoms and basic rights in the presence of democracy. We should adopt democracy in every sphere of life for a peaceful and just society. We should respect the rights, identity, faith and freedoms of others. He said that youth can participate actively for the promotion of democracy and human rights through peaceful healthy activities. He also emphasized on the better way of use of the right of vote for the promotion of true democracy in the country. ADVOCATE MOHAMMAD ZUBAIR The current situation of law and order in perspective of human rights was shares by M. Zubair. He said that youth should equip with awareness regarding laws and legislation. Every citizen has equal rights and fundamental freedoms but most of the citizens are not aware about it. We should multiply the knowledge and awareness with others. He encouraged the youth to participate in the politics to eliminate the culture of feudalism. We should elect noble and capable people to make true democratic government for the true promotion of democracy and human rights in Pakistan. We should include women, youth, minorities and other marginalized groups in mainstream for the development and progress of Pakistan. We should denounce every kind of discrimination and segregation in the society to develop a better society, he added. MR. ATIF JAMEEL PAGAAN. He shared the concept and definition of good governance with youth. He said that every institution of government should work with honest and transparency and do not exceed the limits of powers. Unity and coordination are very much essential among every institution of government for good governance. The state should provide protection to the life, property and rights to every citizen without any discrimination that is good governance. Every institution of the state should accountable before the people of Pakistan on the other hand people should have the right to access to the information that is related to their interest. Vibrant media is true symbol of true governance. In every good government media can play vital role through the check on the condition of the governance in the country. MR. AAMIR SHEHZAD He concluded the workshop with thanks to the participants and the resource persons and said that it is now our responsibly to multiply the awareness regarding democracy and human right. We should provide more opportunities to the youth for their better future for the best interest of a democratic Pakistan. He encouraged the youth to organized such activities in their academic institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights. Youth requested to the DOST Organization to organize amore activities like this in future for the capacity building and awareness of youth. The copies of UDHR and the chapter of fundamental rights according to the constitution of Pakistan 1973 were distributed among the participants along with the hands out prepared by the resource persons.
