Islamabad: March 17, 2012. (Fr.Inayat Bernard) “The forced conversion should end for the monitory women as it is still being practiced in the provinces of Punjab and SIndh”. This was said by the minority delegation who met the minister of state for national harmony Akram Masih Gill in Islamabad in is secretariat on the 13th of March 2012.
The 8 member inter-faith minority delegation requested the minister to work on making a law to stop the forced conversions to make christen women Muslims after rape and getting married with them. They said that in cases like that the parents quiet their mouth shut in order to save themselves after being threatened for life if they bring these things to the media.
The head of delegation Fr. Francis Nadeem OFM Cap (Tamga-e-Imtiaz awarded twice by the precious governments) said that interfaith dialogue is to be promoted among the religion and church denominations. The federal ministry can organize such high level programs on the religious and social occasions. He said that such programs will help to enhance national harmony in the country and the provinces.
He presented an application signed by 4 Catholic priests Frs. Francis Nadeem OFM Cap, Inayat Bernard, Samson Dilawar and Ashraf Gill. The application read was the stop the power failure on Good Friday. Holy Saturday night and the Easter day around the country.
Fr. Inayat Bernard, the editor of Monthly The Christian View asked the minister to provide print and electronic media coverage on special occasions of minority of religious and cultural importance. He said that the religious occasions should be covered in detail by the media to le the other religions also know about one another which is a big help for social harmony.
Fr. Samson Dilawar, Parish priest of Samanabad parish of Lahore Archdiocese said that the common syllabus of Christians should be initiated and implemented in the schools as the Muslim children know about their religions the schools also the minority children should not be deprived of this facility. He further said to revise the 1862 Christian marriage act the safeguard the rights of Christians women.
Fr. Ashrag Gill, the Director of Youth of the Arhdiocese of Lahore asked the minster to encourage the young minority youth for their participation in the fields of sports and other skills.
Sardar Bishan Singh, Chairman Baba Guru Nanak Jee Welfare Society said that the Sikhs of Pakistan should be permitted to get their National Identity Card and their marriages should be recorded and recognized with the government. He asked the minister to help the Sikh community that they can come to Nankaka Shaib; the birthday place of their founder Guru Nanak and get their marriages recorded and be able to obtain certificate as well.
Hindu Pundat Channa Lal from Rawalpindi asked the minister that if the President of the country can invite other religion in the presidency why not the Hindus on their holy occasions of Holi and Diwali.
Responding to the delegation Akram Masih Gill said the their ministry will enquire from the Human Rights ministry for the latest legislation about the conversion bill of minority by Islam and the Sharia Court will also be contacted to get their observations.
He further said that the ministry was planning to start the harmony tv channel in which different religions will have the weekly time to talk about their issues.
He said the media will be more activated to promote harmony in the county. He said as the Punjab provincial government is giving laptop to the deserving Muslim students, the ministry is making a plan to distribute laptops to the intelligent minority students.
He ensured to contact the information ministry for the adequate coverage of religious events and the ministry of wapda to provide electricity during holy week.
The inter-faith delegation prayed for the deceased father of the minister.
