Pakistan: March 16, 2012. (PCP) The Capital Development Authority has set an example of inhumane attitude as its high ups remained engaged in the sports activities instead of addressing the miseries of Sikandar Masih’s family who lost life for inhaling toxic gas a couple of days ago.
Hundreds of CDA sanitary workers protested in Islamabad over death of Sikandar Masih and refused to bury the body until the family is paid promised compensation.
Sikandar, father of four, all under age of 10, lost his life in sector I-9/4 after he breathed in the toxic gas emitting from the blocked sewage works.
Under the law, the sanitation workers are provided safety masks, oxygen cylinders and rope but unfortunate Sikandar Masih lacked all these equipment.
The family members of the deceased said Sikanar once came out of the drain but was forced to go there again for the unknown reasons where he fell unconscious.
However, the victim family is still awaiting any compensation from the CDA, whom they are considering the sole responsible. “We would not bury the dead body until the CDA allots a residential plot to all victim families and the sanitation workers are provided safety masks and other equipment,” said Azeem, brother of Sikandar. He said the body was lying in PIMS and the indifferent attitude on part of the city fathers was more disturbing. He said CDA Mazdoor Union visited the family who also handed over a cheque worth Rs0.3 million.
Addressing the protest gathering, Convener World Minorities Alliance J Salik said Nadeem Masih and Ilyas Masih also died in line of their duty some two years ago but the destitute families yet await compensation. He said CDA had committed to allot residential plot to all victim families but instead of the addressing the grievances orphans and widows, the CDA high ups were busy in sports activities. He said the CDA had outsourced the sanitation services to some contractors whose contracts have repeatedly being renewed since last one decade.
However, following the workers protest the CDA had allocated Rs160 million for purchase of sanitation machinery but the commitment has not so far been executed. Salik said the CDA had been working on model shelters for minorities, model bin bays and other necessary facilities for the sanitation workers but since last four years, no progress could take place. J Salik also announced to a hold a protest on Sunday to reiterate the demands of sanitation workers.
