HRFP rally against discriminatory laws marking 1st anniversary of Shahbaz Bhatti

Faisalabad: March 6, 2012. (PCP) Human Rights Focus Pakistan(HRFP) in collaboration with Global Human Rights Defense(GHRD) commemorate first death anniversary of Mr. Shahbaz Bhatti (Ex-Federal Minister for Minorities Affairs assassinated on March 2nd, 2011), at Press Club, Faisalabad. A Press Conference and a Protesting Rally was organized with a prime motive of raising the concerns and issues of religious minorities regarding the arrest of Shahbaz Bhatti murderers and to direct the attention of higher authorities and media towards all discriminatory laws (295 B/C) and practices against the minorities. Naveed Walter, President of Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) expresses words of despondency with the Government proceeding on Shahbaz Bhatti’s assassination case. He said, the Government is reluctant and playing games in scrutinizing the suspected elements of Shahbaz Bhatti Murder. He demanded urgent arrest of Bhatti’s Murderer. He also shares other reservations of minorities regarding discriminatory practices. Naveed Walter said, there are number of innocent minorities who are fictitiously accused of blasphemy charges. He urged the Government to provide free legal assistance to all those victims and again investigate their cases. Along with this he urged that the Judges of controversial cases should be provided with complete safety so that they can take their decisions in the light of Justice and honesty. Mr. George Clement (Ex Member National Assembly) also spokes regarding the legacy and Struggle of Shahbaz Bhatti towards the protection of minorities rights. In response to a Question, he pointed out the basic cause of discrimination against the minorities. He said Pakistan’s Resolution is the base of religious discrimination in Pakistan and its discriminatory provisions should be amended with the consultation of minorities’ scholars. He recommended the Government to repeal the provision of Pakistan Political Parties Act by obligating every Political Party to issue Party tickets of General Seats to minorities with a proportion of 5%. In the Press Conference, Fr. Aftab James Paul shed light on the role of minorities in the formation of Pakistan. He asked from the representatives of media that why the role of minorities’ leaders is being hindered from the history, why we found hatred material against the minorities in the text book. Fr. Aftab recommended the Government to ensure the esteem of minorities faiths in text books. Ms. Shazia George (human rights activist) highlighted the achievements and Sacrifices of Mr. Shahbaz Bhatti and condemned the role of terrorists in the Country. She urged the media to raise the real issues of minorities. In her view, the minorities’ representation should be ensured in the Election Commission of Pakistan and also in High Government, Semi- Government and Private Institutions of the Country. In the end of Press Conference, HRFP urged the media to take the responsibility of minorities concerning issues in raising their voice to the Policy makers and Decision makers so that minorities could get all deprived rights. After the Press Conference, HRFP and GHRD conducted a rally outside the Press Club, Faisalabad .The Minorities, Civil Society, Political Workers, Social Workers, Religious leaders and Youth actively participated in it. The rally went through various prominent places of the Main Katchery Bazar. The protestors were holding flex, banners and play cards on minorities problems and demands. Slogans were also chanted with a message of Restoring Minorities Rights and repealing discriminatory practices against them. The participants protested against the Government inability to scrutinize and arrest the Murderers of Shahbaz Bhatti. Representatives of Print and Electronic media also took the coverage of the demonstration.
