It is March 2, 2012, day of 1st anniversary of Martyr Shahbaz Bhatti and Election Day of Senate of Pakistan. The millions of Pakistani Christian are sad on assassination of Shahbaz Bhatti but sadder on election results of Senate of Pakistan. They are thinking very seriously that where is their status of number one religious minority in Pakistan in results of Senate of Pakistan? Where is their right of representation proportional to population in Senate of Pakistan, National Assembly of Pakistan and Provincial assemblies? According to results of Senate of Pakistan elections of March 2, 2012, ruling Pakistan Peoples Party PPP gains seats, PML (N), PML (Q), MQM, ANP and JUI (F) also add more seats in House of Senate. Martyr Shahbaz Bhatti claimed his major success, the allocation of 4 reserved seats for minorities in Senate of Pakistan. As he was part of ruling party which reserved 4 seats for minorities in Senate of Pakistan under 18th Amendment in constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan of 1973, so he reserved some credit. But it must be on record that Christian politicians and Christian political groups have been demanding representation in Senate of Pakistan since 1973, when constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan was legislated and Shahbaz Bhatti was not in political arena of Pakistan. There was outstanding demand of Pakistani Christians to increase in their seats in National Assembly of Pakistan and four provincial assemblies which was ignored in 18th Amendment in constitution when Shahbaz Bhatti was part of ruling PPP in government. In 1973, Christians had 6 seats in legislative assembly of Pakistan out of 10 reserved seats for minorities which were marked by strong protest by Christians who observed that such representation is not proportional to their population. I must present a very sad incident of religious intolerance in Pakistan before discussing elections results of Senate of Pakistan of March 2, 2012. After assassination of Shahbaz Bhatti, who was part of ruling PPP in government, his fellow Muslim cabinet ministers remained silent on floor of house when Islamic parties blocked a move to offer prayers for slain Christian minister as to offer prayers for a Christian is un-Islamic. The Muslim clerics have also issued decrees on different occasions that it is un-Islamic to vote for any Christian candidate in any election because it pollutes Muslim vote. It is very important to note that All Indian Christian Association played very positive role in formation of Pakistan and supported All India Muslim League in Pakistan Movement. The Christian voted in favor of Muslims in Round Table Conferences in London 1930-32 and before Boundary Commission for an independent Pakistan and division of Indian sub-continent during British Colonial rule. What leaders of All Indian Christian League demanded from Founder of Pakistan and leader of All Indian Muslim League, Mohammad Ali Jinnah? The President of All India Christian Association Mr. SP Singha, in a meeting with Mohammad Ali Jinnah after independence of Pakistan in Lahore, demanded “Give us in writing that Christian will practice Separate Electorate System in Pakistan”. The founder of Pakistan, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, as a first Governor General of Pakistan, issued a letter for assurance to secure Separate Electorate for Christian. It means that Christian leaders always preferred elections of Christians by vote of Christians in democratic institutions of Pakistan. I must submit that Hindus never supported Pakistan Movement and had no role in independence of Pakistan. What are results of Senate Elections of March 2, 2012, on 4 reserved seats for minorities which Shahbaz Bhatti claimed to be his major achievement? It was believed by Pakistani Christians that as they are biggest minority in Punjab, KPK and Balochistan, so, they will have their Christian Senators in these provinces but election system which was supported by Shahbaz Bhatti, killed Christian representation in KPK and Balochistan and now, there are 2 Hindu Senators, 1 Sikh and only 1 Christian In reality, Muslim disliked Christian parliamentarians elected under Separate Electorate who were starting their speeches with daily Christian Prayers in assemblies. They were reciting Bible verses on floor of house because they were not selected but elected by Christian voters. Therefore, Pakistani Establishment conspired to abolish Separate Electorate which empowered Christians to elect Christian representation. The Pakistani Establishment and Secret Agencies used their Christian tools to impose Joint Electorate in which Muslim political parties Select Christian on reserved seats. It is on record that Shahbaz Bhatti formed his All Pakistan Minorities Alliance after meeting with Dictator General Parvez Musharraf in President House Islamabad with a delegation of Bishops of Catholic and Church of Pakistan in 2001. After formation of APMA by Shahbaz Bhatti, he voiced to end Separate Electorate to kill true representation of Christians in Pakistan. After, imposition of Joint Electorate, Shahbaz Bhatti was awarded with seat in National Assembly of Pakistan and appointed as Federal Minister: What Christian got? The seats decreased to 3 in elections on 2008, while there were 6 in National Assembly in1973. It is gift of Shahbaz Bhatti that he killed Christian’s representation proportional to their population in Pakistan by supporting Joint Electorate on intimation of Pakistani establishment and now Christian have got only 1 seat whereas 2 seats for Hindus and 1 for Sikhs in Senate of Pakistan.
