Faisalabad: February 15, 2012. (PCP) The National Commission for Justice and peace organized a seminar on “Obstacles and resolve to building Peace at local level” at Catholic Church, Chak Jhumra, Faisalabad. At the conclusion, more than 100 people hailing from different walks of life reiterated their commitment to promote tolerance, religious freedom, pluralism and peace in Pakistan. The social and religious harmony and is dependent on the exercise of principles of equality, non- discrimination and enjoyment of rights by the citizens under rule of law, and above all the government should take practical and appropriate steps to promote freedom of religion and peace. During the seminar Fr. Nisar Barkat (Director NCJP, Faisalabad), Peter Jacob (Executive Director, NCJP) Mr. Yaseen Kahlon (Ameer Jamat-e-Islami), Mian Muhammad Rehan (President of Tajir Baradari), Fr. Patrick Anthony, Fr. Mushtaq, Imtaiz Ahmad Lara and Shahid Anwar spoke to the participants.
Participants of the seminar strongly condemned all the unlawful activities in the name of religion and passed the following recommendation for the promotion of culture of tolerance and peace.
1. The participants of the seminar strongly condemn increasing incidents of terrorisms, torture and sectarianism and demand that call upon the government of Pakistan to take effective and practical steps to the implement rule of law and protect religious minorities.
2. Elements responsible for undermining religious freedom and interfaith peace should be brought to justice and appropriate steps should be taken to amend discriminatory laws, policies and biased social attitudes.
3. The government should speed up the work to establish an independent, impartial National Human Rights Institution according to the Paris Principles to promote and protect human rights and to monitor situation of the religious minorities and to redress the complaints in this regards.
4. The participants appeal to the Parliament of Pakistan to demonstrate its commitments human rights in the form of a resolution that it would abolish all the legislation contradictory to the international human rights standards and will not adopt any legislation in future which undermines the international human rights standards.
5. We urge the government of Pakistan to review the syllabus for educational institutions to make it free from religious and gender biases and include materials for civic education.
