Faisalabad: February 9, 2012. (PCP) Arooj-e-Mariam Catholic Church organized a 3-days orientation workshop titled “Education for Human Rights and Peace Building” at Centre for Peace and Harmony in Faisalabad. The trainers of the workshop called upon Government to: abolish all forms of discriminations existing in the constitution, laws, policies and curriculum against women and religious minorities; ensure implementation upon the existing domestic laws for the protection of human rights and rule of law; curriculum must be free from all kinds of hatred material and syllabus must be made a source for the promotion of human rights, peace, equality, harmony, tolerance and social values, media should avoid advertising discriminatory material against any religion, and should play its positive role for the promotion of peace and religious tolerance.
The trainers of the workshop included; Father Nisar Barkat (Director-NCJP), Mr. Ayub Sajjid, Mr. Muzamil Hussain Asad, Mr. Shahid Anwar, Mr. Suneel Malik, Ms. Shazia George, Ms. Kiran Afzaal Advocate and Ms. Aqsa Kanwal and Ms. Nadia Ayub. 40 Muslim and Christian trainees including teachers, Students and representatives of NGOs from Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Okara, Sahiwal, Jhang Khushpur and Lahore actively participated in the workshop.
Father Nisar Barkat said, “It is the responsibility of a good leader to raise voice against injustices and human rights violations which leave negative effects on the society”, youth should play their positive and constructive role for the promotion of culture of peace, harmony and human rights in the society, he added.
Mr. Ayub Sajjid said, promotion of peace is our duty and access to justice is our right, therefore peace cannot prevail without ensuring justice and human rights in the country, and promotion of peace and harmony is impossible unless we give equal rights to the marginalized groups too.
Mr. Muzamal Hussain Asad said, “there were great leader in our history who done great efforts for the promotion of peace and interfaith harmony in Pakistan, at present we need the same great leaders, to raise voice against injustice and human rights violations, which are the obstacles in the process of change.
Mr. Sunil Malik said, “Peace cannot prevail without justice and human rights, so Govt. should ensure equal rights for all citizens regardless of any discrimination”. Civil society including media, human rights organizations and political parties, should play their part in the campaign for Human rights” he added.
Mr. Shahid Anwar said, “Government should provide equal opportunities to every citizen regardless of religion, sex, sect and language and must implement United Nations treaties for improvement in human rights situation in Pakistan”.
Ms. Kiran Afzaal said, “We could not improve the situation of human rights until the laws should be removed from the constitution of Pakistan, which are against human rights standard because where human rights are respected there will be peace in the society”.
Ms. Shazia George said, Women are compelled to confine themselves within homes in our society and they are not involved in decision making in all aspects of life”. “Civil society must play their role to eradicate the discrimination and violence against women for the betterment of human rights situation”, she added.
Ms. Aqsa Kanwal said, “It is impossible to make a society prosperous and civilized unless we give the equal rights to the marginalized groups (women, minorities and children), it is impracticable to establish peace without justice”.
