Christian leader visits Adiala Jail on eve of Milad-un-Nabi

Rawalpindi: February 5, 2012. (PCP) Julius Salik, Convener, World Minorities Alliance, visited the Adiala Jail and distributed 8 baskets of 40kg sweetmeats in the prisoners on the auspicious occasion of Eid Milad-un-Nabi here Sunday. 8 baskets of sweetmeats represent four provinces Punjab sindh , Balochistan , NWFP, Federal Area AJK, GB, and fata. Mr. Salik was accompanied by his wife Mary Salik, Rev Inayat, his staff and human rights activists. He was received by Shaukat Feroz, DIG, Jails, Rawalpindi Region, along with other officials. The main function was held in a hall where Syed Shams Ali, a prisoner and teaching at jail school and also secretary of Milad Committee acted as the stage secretary. Addressing the guests and a selected group of 100 inmates half of them Muslims and the other half Christians, J Salik said that he started the first Eid Milad-un-Nabi 30 years ago in Lahore and felt proud to be a Christian respecting Islam and expressing solidarity with its Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) practically by participating such a function. Mr Salik thanked the jail authorities especially DIG, Headquarters (Jails) Punjab Mian Salak Jalal for facilitating the visit at short notice. He said that helping hapless humanity is enshrined in both Islam and Christianity. Addressing the prisoners, he said that they are behind the bars may be due to azmaish (test) the God wishes to seek. He referred to many leaders and freedom fighters who were condemned to jails. He said that those in jails have a lot of opportunity to worship and seek His forgiveness. He said that this reception is a symbol of Muslim-Christian solidarity and Mohsin-e-Insaniat (SAW) gave a message of peace, salamati (security}, love and tolerance. The former Federal Minister said that nobody remembers Ministers here but humanity is alive because of the preaching of Bulleh Shah, Bari Sarkar, Data Sahib and Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. He said that love is accommodating others and not boasting and creating misunderstandings. He said that in his 65-year life he never touched a weapon and if somebody wanted to show him his revolver, he asked him to first wrap it in a piece of cloth. He said that he himself had gone to jail 30 years ago during Gen Zia period for saving this country and its institutions. He said that the respect and honour you get in Pakistan is not available in any other country of the world. He said that Islam does not believe in the division of class or libas (dress). He said that you cannot learn love peace and humanity in universities but in Quran and Bible etc.He advised the prisoners to pray for their children and asked the jail officials to help the inmates in solving their small problems. He ended his speech with the slogans of Pakistan Zindabad and Muslim-Christianity Ittehad Zindabad. Shaukat Feroz was happy that a Christian leader had come along with his family expressing solidarity with Muslim majority on the occasion of birthday of their Prophet. He lauded the services of J Salik in the past for peace and human rights. He said that he always helped jail authorities in observing human rights in jails. He said that Pakistan is like a bouquet where religious denominations are like beautiful flowers. He said that Salik is also like a flower who raises his voice whenever he sees cruelty and excels in religious harmony. He referred to many episodes of J Salik in the past in this respect. Rev Inayat speaking on the occasion said that he had been in Adiala Jail in 1984 and saw Salik fighting for human rights even then. He also led a dua at the end of his speech. Mushtaq Awan, Superintendent of Adiala Jail, thanked the entourage of Salik, jail officers, prisoners and Milad Committee on the occasion. A prisoner Syed Hamid Ali Shah recited a naat Meray aaqa ka roza Madina mein hay on the occasion.
