Christian-Muslim leaders vow to support Islamabad hospitals protesting employees

Islamabad: February 01, 2012. (PCP) Convener World Minorities Alliance J Salik has reiterated his full support to the demands of the protesting staff of three local hospitals who staged a resolute sit-in at Kalsum Plaza Chowk on Tuesday. Addressing a joint press conference with local leaders of trade unions, representatives of business community and civil society J Salik thanked them for extending full support to the protesters by providing 80 quilts and tents during their sit-in. He condemned local administration’s attempt to disperse protesters well past midnight but upon his resistance protesters ended the sit-in after Interior Minister Rehman Malik’s assurance that he would take their demands to the Prime Minister. He said if protesters’ demands were not met before Eid Miladun Nabi, World Minorities Alliance along with leaders of trade unions and representatives of business community and civil society would constitute a joint action committee to devise future line of action which could include a country-wide campaign in favor of protesters. Addressing the joint press conference Zahoor Awan, General Secretary Pakistan Workers Federation thanked the media for giving due coverage to the sit-in of protesting medics and paramedics of three local hospitals. He also thanked the protesters for remaining peaceful and cooperative in attending the patients under difficult circumstances. He demanded immediate release of the traders who were arrested for providing tent and sound system to the protesters. Raja Waqar Hussain, Secretary General Pak PWD Workers Federation pledged full support of his organization to the demands of protesting staff of three local hospitals. He urged the government to accept protesters’ demands. Others who addressed the joint press conference included, Munnawar Mughal, former president and executive member Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry, executive member Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Tikka Khan, General Secretary All Pakistan Akhbar Farosh Federation, Muhammad Ajmal Baloch, Central Organising Secretary Traders Action Committee Islamabad, Aurang Zeb Khan, President CDA Mazdoor Union, Muhammad Akram Bhatti, Secretary General All Pakistan Sports Boards Employees Union Islamabad and Raja Waqar Hussain, Secretary General Pak PWD United Workers Federation.
