Karachi: January 21, 2012. (PCP) Bishop Dr. Ijaz Inayat of Church of Pakistan has expressed reservations on Christian Marriage Amendment Bill 2011 and Christian Divorce Amendment Bill 2011, submitted for legislation in Secretariat of National Assembly of Pakistan by National Commission on Security of Women NCSW.
The National Commission on Security of Women NCSW is established by government of Pakistan to secure rights of women which took lead to draft Christian Marriage Amendment Bill 2011, Christian Divorce Amendment Bill 2011 and Hindu Marriage and Divorce Bill 2011, while Federal Minority Ministry have been meeting Hindu leaders from 2009 to draft Hindu Marriage Bill because Hindu Marriage Bill not exist in Pakistan since 1947, independence of Pakistan.
Bishop Ijaz Inayat said “I want to point out the neglected issues by the NCSW in the drafting of the bills. There are run away brides due to moral issues and they having recited the “Kalma” at the hands of a Mullah are declared Muslims and marry the same time with the person of their choice. Their previous marriage stands dissolved according to a verdict of the Islamic Sharia Court. According to my information, the period of “Iddiat” is mandatory for a woman even if she converts and then she must also extend an invitation to her husband according to the Sharia Law. The absence of required legal provisions gives a blanket approval to the abusers of this law. In many cases the women of minorities who are abducted are forcefully converted to Islam and never given back. Some, having illicit extra martial relations also abuse the weakness in the legal frame work. I would request the legal experts to protect the women from these abuses while finalizing the draft for the marriage bills of the minorities”
