(PCP) World Minorities Alliance Convener J Salik known for innovative ideas to propagate his views chose the Diamond Jubilee of taking over the throne by Queen Elizabeth-II to highlight importance and linkage of peace and democracy through a conference titled ‘Tribute to Democracy’ held here on Thursday.
He also collected many of the artists making the paintings of the formal ruler of UK in different outfits and stages of age. He linked the Queen to democracy saying UK is the biggest democracy of the world.
J Salik who turned 65 said that this was culmination of his 35 years struggle. He called for respecting minority rights. He said Malaysia is a perfect example of inter-faith harmony, which announces holidays on Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist days. He said 2.5 Muslims in UK are enjoying rights and 20 minority members are directly elected to Parliament, which is not allowed in Pakistan.
Addressing the ceremony, former British MP Muhammad Sarwar said: “We may have different backgrounds, but belong to one human race.” He promised to organise an exhibition of this versatile collection of paintings of British Queen in UK. He said that his Glasgow constituency has people of all religious denominations and their religious headquarters. He said that his constituency had only 10 per cent minority people. He said: “We should give importance to minority rights. He said that Gojra carnage in Toba Tek Singh, his ancestors’ district, was the most tragic incident of his life.
He criticized the system of electing minority seats in Pakistan, which force a candidate to become member of a political party. He called for giving two votes to minority voters: one for electing general legislator and the other for minority seat legislator.
He said: “EU gives subsidy of more than 2 dollars a day to a cow per day and we in the third world should think what we are spending on human beings. Give priority to human rights.” “Why we did not accept will of people in case of Algiers and Palestine,” he asked.
He opposed the ECP decision of banning dual nationality legislators saying put restrictions on those who take money out of Pakistan to foreign lands.
Ambassador of Oman Mohamed Said Al-Lawati in traditional costume said: “It is pleasure to see different varieties of Pakistani nation in the hall who are our brothers and show that all communities in the world are one and working together to make peace.” He said that those saying there is no peace in Pakistan should come here and see there is peace in the country.
Charan Jeet Singh Saghar with red turban started with Baba Nanak saying the whole world was created from one light and we had no right to label any one good or bad. He said: “As good Pakistani, we should respect all religions and countries.” MNA Mahboob Ullah Jan, chief patron of World Minorities Alliance, said that all human beings are one and all the Prophets (PBUT) talked of humanity. He said that love, peace and prosperity are our aims. Haroon Sir said that we need peace for you, us and everybody. He said that we want to raise the issue of minority rights in UNO.
