Christian MPA of Sindh demands public apology from Bishop Daniel on St. Andrew issue

Karachi: December 1, 2011. (PCP) Mr. Saleem Khursheed Khokhar, Member Provincial Assembly Sindh, Chairman Standing Cmmmittee on Minorities Affairs, Sindh Assembly and President All Pakistan Minor ties Alliance Sindh addressed Press Conference at St. Andrews Church, Saddar Karachi on November 30,2011. He said as you are aware that it has recently been published in one of the newspaper that the Bishop Sadiq Daniel of Karachi Diocese, Church of Pakistan has publically announced and admitted that he would sale St. Andrews Church open land and built under the cover of development. After reading this news in the newspaper he was shocked that the Church which has been allotted for the purposes of Worship only is being sold out and commercialize. Bishop Sadiq Daniel also falsely accused him that Mr. Saleem Khursheed Khokhar intends to sale this property. He said, he has requested Standing Committee on Board of Revenue constituted by the Provincial Assembly Sindh to hold a meeting and conduct enquiry and decide the future of St. Andrews Church's properties / land etc. in the light of publication in one of the leading newsaper. On his request a second meeting was convened on Tuesday, 29-11-2011 at Committee Room No.1, Sindh Assembly Building Karachi at 12:00 noon under the Chairmanship of Fida Hussain Dehro. The following members of the committee attended the said meeting. 1) Mrs. Kulsoom Akhtar Chandi, MPA 2) Mr. Arif Mustafa Jatoi, MPA 3) Mr. Mehboob Ali Bijrana, MPA 4) Mr. Khalid Saif, MPA 5) Dr. Ahmed Ali, MPA Mr. Sardar Ahmed. Minister Government of Sindh attended the meeting on an invitation. After detailed deliberation and discussion on the matter of construction, selling and commercialization of St. Andrews land surrounding the church it was unanimously decidd by the Members that St. Andrews Church properties / open land surrounding the church would not be used for commercial purposes in thus, shops / commercial plaza etc. would not be built therien. This has been recommended to the Provincial Assembly Sindh for such prohibitation. He said, since Bishop Sadiq Daniel, Karachi Diocese, Church of Pakistan has falsely accused me publically in one of the English newspaper. In this connection, already sent a legal notice through my Counsel Mr. Ilyas Khan, Advocate Supreme Court wherein he had been asked by his counsel in the said notice that "he should publically apologize to be printed in at least four newspapers, two in English language and two in Urdu language and to pay compensation to our client for causing damage to his reputation in the sum of Rs.50 millions, within 5 days of the receipt of the receipt of legal notice, failing which the counsel has been given positive instructions to institute suit for defamation and also criminal case for defamation, entirely at his own risk as to the cost and consequences". He pledged Rs. 5.00 Millions to be spent for the repair and maintenance of the roof etc. of the Church Building of St. Andrews Church and Rs. 1.00 Million for leveling, maintenance and making the ground useful for larger prayers services. He promised to the Church Members and the Committee that full security would be provided at the time of larger prayer services and convention as and when required by the Government of Sindh on request. He stressed that the commercialization of the St. Andrews Church's open land / properties would not be allowed at any cost. He further said, very soon a BILL on the protection of Minority Worship Places which have been allotted for the worship purposes only would be introduced in the Provincial Assembly Sindh Karachi wherein Church, Mandril, Dharamshala, Graveyard, Symmetries and Open land, Schools and other allied institutions belongs to minorities communities would be used only for the purposes for which such properties allotted and no commercialization would be allowed in and under the cover of development.
