Pakistani Christians National Conference demands Elections not Selection on reserved Parliament seats
Sambrial, Sialkot: October 10, 2011. (PCP) The hundreds of delegates representing different Christian Social, Writers, Poets and Political organizations from all over Punjab in “National Christians Conference” adopted an unanimous Resolution demanding Election on reserved seats for religious minorities in National Assembly of Pakistan and five provincial assemblies of Pakistan, instead of existing Selection system.
The National Christians Conference called by Pakistan Christian Writers Guild was held in city of Samrial on October 8, 2011.
The Christian moot was presided over by Mr. J Salik, former federal minister of Population Planning, government of Pakistan; Nominee for Nobel Peace Prize and Convener World Minorities Alliance.
Mr. Rana Asif Mahood, Member Punjab Assembly and Mr. Sarfraz Khan, Chairman SMS, a Civil Society Activist were guest of honor in National Christians Conference.
The National Christians Conference rejected practicing electorate system in which Muslim political parties select minorities’ representation in Parliament of Pakistan on seats reserved for them.
The speakers of this venue said that existing electorate system for minorities has brutally violated Christian’s rights and termed it conspiracey against religious communities.
The National Christian Conference expressed grave concern on not awarding representation to minorities from Federal Capital area in Senate of Pakistan in 18th Amendment.
In his presidential address, Mr. J Salik said that announcement of four seats for Minorities in Senate of Pakistan are not proportional to our population and without any notification of allocation and distribution of four seats among different religious minorities is creating confusing.
J Salik demanded amendment in Peoples Representation Act of 1976, to clarify limitation on Minorities seats in National Assembly of Pakistan, Senate of Pakistan and Provincial Assemblies.
The National Christians Conference expressed reservations on member of national assembly who are legislating such laws oppose ideology of Quaid-e-Azam which is creating feeling of insecurity among millions of minority individuals.
Rana Asif Mahmood, Member Punjab Assembly, in his speech demanded Dual Voting rights for minorities.
J Salik had challenged Selection on reserved seats for minorities in Supreme Court of Pakistan before national general elections of 2002.
Mr. Salik in his speech said that after democracy in Pakistan, the act to endorse Ordinance of a dictator regarding Selection System in 18th Amendment is very surprising for him when decision was pending on his petition in Supreme Court of Pakistan to challenge Selection system.
Professor Yousuf Nayyer, Yousaf Naz, Javed Yadd, Tariq Tabassum, Charles Gill, Parvez Bazmi , Aftab Javed and Zehshan Joseph also address the gathering.
Mr. Javed Gull, Ajnum Parvez Gill, Tariq Tabassum, Dr. Tajumal Fiaaz, Babar Imtiaz, Nasir Javed, Zafar Khokhar and Fazal Khiali praised delegates who traveled from far flung areas of Punjab to participate in Conference.
