Pakistani Christian accused of blasphemy dies in jail

Lahore: September 16, 2011. (PCP) Aslam Masih serving life term in Lahore jail on accusation of blasphemy was found mysteriously dead on September 9, 2011. The jail authorities not admitted Aslam Masih to any hospital for treatment nor provided him adequate medical help. The death of Aslam Masih has raised questions about inmates in different prisons of Pakistan waiting for trials or serving under charges of blasphemy. There have been concerns about the safety of Asia Bibi, a Christian mother, sentenced to death on accusation of blasphemy and now in jail. According to ISHR, Aslam Masih was admitted to the prison hospital two months ago while Prison officials justified the refusal to transfer to "security concerns". CLAAS, a local partner organization of the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) received dead body, as the family of the deceased is not found. The ISHR regarded the death as an endorsement of "enhanced and deliberate discrimination against Christians."
