Mandi Bahauddin: August 10, 2011. (Sher Gondal) The people have urged government to renovate railway that is only public conveyance facility left in the country for the poor. They said hundreds of passengers are stuck on Mandi Bahauddin and Malikwal railway stations daily in sweltering heat because of trains delay. Local trains arrive about four hours late beyond schedule timings whereas long-distance mail trains run late by eight to ten hours. Shuttle service of trains between Malikwal and Khushab and Malikwal and Bhera has been suspended except one trip of train between Malikwal and Khushab which previously was four times a day. Condition of railway stations and railway lines is also deplorable. Social circles have said that due to negligence and inefficiency of railway officials, the railway is gradually drifting to meet a fate of Government Transport Service that was abolished due to poor and dishonest management. Some time back Federal Railway Minister gave SOS call to save railway from falling into gutter but democratic government closed eyes over seriousness of the issue. Now the 45 trains operation has been suspended and there is no solution in sight to turn the railway to life, they added. Social circles are of the opinion that government and supreme parliament have brought state institutions close to destruction and the country is likely to get a status of “failed state” if proper measures are not taken.
