ISLAMABAD: June 30, 2011 (PCP) Former Federal Minister for Population Welfare and Convener World Minorities Alliance J. Salik has warned the government that he and minorities of the country would launch a nationwide campaign against the injustices being done to them in the name of the 18th amendment; and that he would also approach the superior courts for remedy. In a statement issued in Islamabad on Thursday he observed that under the 18th amendment, federal ministry for minorities has been abolished which is the violation of the basic structure of the constitution. He recalled that founder of the nation Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in his statements after the independence had declared that the minorities of Pakistan would be sacred trust of the federation. That is why he added the white color was added to the national flag of Pakistan that signifies the guarantees of fair treatment to the minorities. He also recalled that in the same spirit former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto the author of constitution of 1973 had provided the basis for the establishment of the ministry of minorities’ affairs at the level of the federation. He pointed out that by the virtue of establishment of this ministry at the federal level it was acknowledged that the minorities is a subject of the federation of Pakistan and that under the 18th amendment this principle has been violated by delegating this subject to the provinces. He lamented that the during the previous government of General ® Pervez Musharraf the minorities were deprived from their constitutional right of direct election on their reserved seats in the parliament; now the larger political parties have this right to “select” minorities representatives against these positions. He further lamented that the incumbent government continuing to deny and usurp the rights of the minorities has started a new scheme of privatization of sanitation and related affairs. He noted that under one such step the administration of Lahore has awarded a contract for 20 years to a private entity, South Waste Management Company for cleanliness and sanitation of Lahore city. He said by the virtue of this illegal and unconstitutional deed the future of over seven thousand families has been put at stake as this company has been entrusted with the powers to proceed against these poor and helpless working lot. He said under the law and constitution government servants cannot be dealt alike and their related affairs cannot be privatized. He warned that he would be compelled to seek the intervention of international human rights organization for remedy and to end the exploitation of minorities.
