Lawyer protest against a Judge in Mandi Bahauddin

Pakistan: May 30, 2011. (Gangly Khan) lawyers are on strike as a protest against District and Sessions Judge since 9 May 2011. Courts business is completely ceased. Litigants after traveling long distances appear in the courts daily in the morning where courts staff give them dates for next hearing. Protest started when the judge checked an advocate sitting in the court room with cross legs and speaking loudly. The judge directed Naib court to ask the advocate to sit properly. The Naib court conveyed the message and the advocate responded positively. The matter was settled. In the meantime another advocate sitting closely took out the advocate out of the court room and told him that the judge had insulted him. They both told the matter to bar president and other lawyers and consequently a resolution was passed in a meeting according to which the judge was asked to apologize before the house or get himself posted out. The judge clarified his position that he had not done anything insulting and as such he would not apologize. However he said he would try for his posting out. Till today neither the judge has apologized nor his posting ordered. Strike is continuing and litigants are suffering. People of the area have urged the competent authorities to take notice of the matter to end the strike in the courts.
