An Estimated 30,000 Women Die Each Year Due To Pregnancy Related Causes

LARKANA: May 9, 2011. (By Nazir Siyal) Society of obstetricians and Gynecologists of Pakistan (SOGP) arranged a seminar on Maternal Mortality audit and interactive session to mark the International Mother’s Day here at Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University SMBBMU auditorium hall Larkana on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, Provincial Minister for Women Development Tauqir Fatima Bhutto paid tribute to the mothers and said the mothers has great role in Islamic society and its respect as the paradise lies under the feet. She also asked every one to health pray for Nusrat Bhutto and said the women awareness regarding health and empowerment of women was the dream of Benazir Bhutto. Minister for Women Development further said the under age marriages should be avoided, in the regard legislation is being made, while there is shortage of skilled Doctors and paramedics in the remote areas, where the women are suffering and dying during the deliveries she said. Tauqir Fatima Bhutto said why more budget on Army and its institutions, she stressed there is a need to provide ambulances and other health facilities at different Rural Health Centers, Basic Health Units and Taluka Hospitals for the women facilitation. On the occasion, a large number of Gynecologists Professors and Doctors across the Sindh spoke high about the health of mothers. The speakers said that the status of maternal health is poor in Pakistan and skilled attendants are not at childbirth which is the most effective intervention. President SOGP Proffessor Lubna Hassan said there is dire need to save the mothers by will not by technology; because there are socio-economic problems are behind the maternal mortality incidents not medical deaths, adding that the Pakistan is not close to the International Millennium Development Goal she said. Dr. Lubna Hassan further said the Doctors should be trained about labour and Gynee to groom their skills. While, Dr. Nighat Shah Secretary General SOGP highlighted that 280 girls are dying in maternal mortality rate every day in heavily populated Pakistan, which is about 276 per 100000 ratio. She also said that the teaching hospital and other related unit should play their role and responsibilities regarding proper care with skills to save thei lives of common mothers. On the occasion, Professor Rafia Baloch told that an estimated 30,000 women die each year due to pregnancy related causes, while 10039 IPD (Obstetric.) cases, deliveries about 6002, and total live births 4287 in year 2010 were reported at Sheikh Zaid Women Hospital Larkana. She also said that the type of complications regarding Obstructed Labour are 148 which is about 9.64%, Perineal rupture 1.23%, 36 Fistula (VVF & RVF) 2.3% and 1000 cases of Miscarriage which is about 65% were reported. She also told that the number of induced abortion cases (Missed abortion) about 554, which is also 55.4%. Professor Rafia apprised that the delay in decisions to seek health care is major factor behind the complications, acceptance of maternal death, Low status of women, Socio-cultural barriers to seeking care, delay in reaching care, mountains, islands, rivers — poor organization, delay in receiving care, Supplies, personnel, poorly trained personnel with punitive attitude, finances. She also recommended the solutions of problems including the need of resources specially Manpower and facilities, need of facilitation institutional/management capacity - national and state level, lot of programs designed most important is of implementation by everybody, every where and all the times, while the need of more focus on effective strategies - EmOC and skilled birth attendance and its maximum linkage with all levels, more and more of monitoring, supervising, evaluation and maximum help, role of media for counseling and utilization of preventive measures by women's along with attendant, paramedical and Medical staff, maximum facilitation by administration, political and NGO’s. She also emphasised on the increasing community awareness, promotion of appropriate technology and, effective health care plannings starting from grass root levels to tertiary levels. DCO Larkana Abdul Aleem Lashari denied any threats to the Doctors in Sheikh Zaid Women Hospital and other CMC units, adding that there is no any security threat, so that they should perform their duties without any fear. He said the Doctors should serve the humanity without any specific areas but the whole community. On the occasion, Principal Chandka Medical College Professor Assadullah Mahar, Dr. Shahida Innayat Magsi, Professor Rahat Qureshi of Agha Khan, Dr. Fozia Kashif, Proffessor Nargis Soomro, Dr. Kulsoom Asad Lashari and others participated in one day seminar.
