Faisalabad: May 4, 2011. (PCP) Peace and Human Development (PHD), Association of Women for Awareness and Motivation (AWAM), Liaison for Enforcement of Human Rights (LEHR) and Workers Party Pakistan (WPP) jointly staged a protest rally titled “Yes to Workers’ Rights” on 1st May 2011 to observe the international labour day at Circular Road in Faisalabad. This rally was led by Suneel Malik, Nazia Sardar, Shazia George and Arif Ayaz, and was joined by people from different schools of thought including representatives of trade unions, student unions, political parties and civil society organizations.
The protesters marched at Circular Road, and raised full throat slogans in a scorching heat against skyrocketing inflation, less wages, load-shedding of energy, bonded labour, feudalism, capitalism, contract system, privatization, unemployment, IMF, WTO, World Bank, government’s anti-poor economic policies, anti-labour laws and discrimination against female workers at work places.
The participants were carrying placards and banners inscribed with their demands to give relief to the poor and working class that: Minimum monthly wages PKR 15,000 for working class should be fixed as per price hikes, and issuance of social security for all kind of workers must be made certain; The government must ratify ILO convention 177 protecting home based workers, and labour unfriendly laws should be repealed and all labour friendly policies & laws must be devised in conformity with ILO conventions; The unrecognized women workers engaged in informal sectors including home-based workers, peasant workers and domestic workers should be recognized legally as part of the labour force; The women workers must be provided protection against harassment and discrimination at work places, and safe women friendly atmosphere should be created at work places.
